Censorship Around the World

Traversing the globe I'm often amused or perplexed by the different things different cultures choose to censor from movies, television, or websites. Based on the clue, see if you can name the piece of media being censored.

USA
For the television broadcast, a famous line from this movie is changed to, "I've had it with these monkey fighting snakes on this Monday-to-Friday plane!"
Snakes on a Plane
Bahrain
In this film's opening scene a convict on a chain gang sings "No God, above, and Hell alone below." The line and others are removed entirely from the movie.
Les Miserables
Saudi Arabia
Several scenes of Jessica Alba swimming underwater in a bikini, presumably the entire reason this film exists at all, were cut.
Into the Blue
Vietnam
Will Farrell's rendition of "My Humps" sung while on a treadmill is excised from this film, along with many scenes of comic homoeroticism.
Blades of Glory
United Arab Emirates
In this film two racist central Asian men are terrified when they discover their hosts are Jewish. All references to Jews are edited out and the word "Jew" is bleeped.
Borat
USA
In order to secure a PG-13 rating from the MPAA, an iconic line in this movie is modified to "yippee ki yay mother (gunshot)"
Live Free or Die Hard
Saudi Arabia
Presumably because being raised by a woman is the worst thing imaginable in this culture, the one word that always gets censored here condemns a character in this film to be referred to simply as "Fat _______"
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
USA
In the original cut Marla Singer tells her lover "I want to have your abortion." The MPAA told the producers to change it to anything else. The film was re-edited at the last minute to something perhaps even more offensive.
Fight Club
United Kingdom
This American satirical news TV show had an episode pulled from UK rebroadcast because it showed footage of Parliament. In response, the show created outrageously ridiculous animated segments of Parliament and the Royal wedding (animation apparently being okay)
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
Saudi Arabia
In this film scenes of drug use, murder, a hooker getting chopped into little pieces at a bachelor party and people uttering every obscenity imaginable were left in tact, while Kobe Tai's boobies were cut out.
Very Bad Things
China
Many scenes featuring Chow Yun Fat's character Captain Sao Feng were cut from this film, reducing his total on-screen time by about half.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
Egypt
This film about a man who becomes God for a few days was banned completely on the grounds that it was blasphemous.
Bruce Almighty
Bahrain
A bounty hunter and his companion talk with a plantation owner in his home. In the background there is a statue of two men wrestling in the nude. For the Bahraini edit, the background is replaced with a large indistinct blur.
Django Unchained
Saudi Arabia
Though the practice of blurring or pixelating women or people is actually commonplace here, it made headlines when it came out that this large furniture store chain had "photoshopped" out women completely from images in their catalogues. The company lied and said that it was done in error.
IKEA catalog
USA
On this American-based website, extremely rude, prejudiced, and offensive comments are posted routinely and sometimes left uncensored, while comments from other users correcting the prejudicial remarks are frequently deleted.

Expanded! I'd like to find some way to include some other weird Chinese censorship decisions, for instance the ban on showing skeletons... which means that all the Magic: The Gathering cards sold with pictures of skeletons have to have their art slightly altered to make it look like there is some skin/flesh left on the skeleton. Or the more recent decree against depicting time travel, but haven't come across a good way to fit these into the quiz.

and of course there are the weird rules governing pornographic films and hentai in Japan but I don't think that would really fit, either.

Just found what I think may be an example of the latter... recently I downloaded a camcorded version of X-Men: Days of Future Past. It was recorded in China. Every direct reference to real historical events, such as the Vietnam War, were cut out. Is was really really baffling, and made some parts of this movie all about time travel difficult to understand. My only guess is that it was due to the recent ban already mentioned against depicting time travel because of the fear that it would confuse Chinese audiences about "true" history- whatever version that the Chinese government approves of anyway. I suppose Chinese filmgoers didn't know that there were not actually mutants fighting in Vietnam and that nobody ever tried to use giant flying robots in an attempt to assassinate Richard Nixon. Don't want them to get confused.

The Chinese government decided that he was a negative Chinese stereotype. If that's the only one you find puzzling then you think more like a censor than I do. :) I find all of the above pretty stupid.

Sat through another movie this weekend courtesy of Bahrain Cinemas- World War Z. Thanks to the idiot censors I'm really not sure why they went to Israel, that bit of the movie has chopped to pieces. I assume the offensive thing here was that Israel exists- can't let that bit of news get out in this part of the world.

Another hilarious and perplexing example... this one via a Gulf Air flight in the airspace over Oman... I was watching Anchorman and, among a long list of other extremely odd censorship decisions, there was the choice to bleep out such offensive words as "hynie" and "poop mouth," a re-dubbing of the audio so that "intercourse island" because "wife swapping island" (how the heck does that make it better? I guess as long as they're married then any sexual deviancy is a-okay!), and, perhaps most odd, the scene where Jack Black kicks Baxter (in the scene replaced by what is obviously a stuffed toy) off a bridge, the kicking part is cut out. You just see Jack Black walk to the right with a stuffed dog in hand, and then you hear a splash. "Now this is happening!" er.. what exactly? haha... I guess there's a policy against showing animal cruelty on Gulf Air? They also cut short the scene where a guy gets his arm cut off, but the show a man getting stabbed in the chest with a trident.

The edit of the arm-chopping scene was particularly stupid as it was completely counter-productive. With the extended scene of the guy cursing his bleeding stump... it plays as comical and ridiculous. When they cut off the bit with the goofy reaction... it actually seems more violent and real and less cartoonish.

Just watched The Wolf of Wall Street at the cinema in Bahrain the other day. It was awful. Sometimes could barely tell what was going on and the dialogue getting muted every 30 seconds for this or that was highly distracting. Plus it would have been nice to see that chick naked, I know she was a couple times. Censorship blows.

well... I used to see a very large number of my comments get deleted. Most of the time it was because I saw someone post something offensive in the comments section themselves, like, "hurrr.. I got 100 on this quiz but I'm an Englishman, of course the percentage is low because of all the stupid Yanks on this site;" to which I would respond appropriately by calling this person out for their ignorance. Frequently, my comments would be deleted but the original offending comment would remain. This happened repeatedly.

It seems to happen less often these days. Maybe I've gotten better at figuring out what QM will or will not deem appropriate and this has informed my comment style, or maybe he's eased up some on deleting comments. Or maybe I just don't return to quizzes often enough to see that my comments have been deleted anymore. Not sure. Anyway the unilateral and often (to my mind) somewhat uneven/arbitrary censorship bugged me, not that it's the end of the world or anything.

I've come across another rather hilarious case of censorship here in Turkey. Apparently... there must be a ban against showing certain things on TV, including I think nipples, blood/gore, and cigarettes. This has resulted in some interesting and humorous edits. Often, they just blur the offensive object out. For instance, the film Munich was shown on TV here, and in the scene with the lady assassin where she tries to save herself by baring her breasts, that's still in there, but they just replaced her nipples with two small blurry spots. And in the South Park episode where the cable TV guy is rubbing his nipples talking about how their customers have no choice, they just zoomed in on his face. You can see his arms moving but no nipples. By far the funniest thing, though, is that typically when someone is smoking, the cigarette has been replaced by a cartoon flower. So... frequently there are people on screen holding smoking flowers in their hands or lips, like we can't figure it out.

The movie "Buster" about the great train robbery in the 60s was banned (and as far as I know still is) from being shown in the town of Crewe in the UK. This is because the train driver (who lived in the town) suffered fatal injuries in the real event and the film glorified the robbery.

My mom told me a long time ago that there was a movie in which the phrase "bloody hell" was censored two ways: in the UK, they took out the "bloody," and in the US, they took out the "hell!"

I wouldn't be surprised if that were true even if it sounds like it was made up. But what one person considers offensive or objectionable someone else would not think of that way at all - which is one among many reasons why censorship is stupid.
