Countries of the World in a (Better) Spinning Globe
How many countries can y... wait, the map is spinning - and this time with more frames! Can you still name every country before the time runs out? As you answer, the map will be filled in.
Since the SVG map is extremely heavy, you may encounter problems as a mobile user. I recommend using a PC. If the animation isn't showing properly, try using a different browser like Chrome.
Use the common, English name. Has to be a sovereign nation, so Scotland and England don't count, etc...
You can click the map to zoom
Animated using CSS. Maps created using Python. Map data from NaturalEarth.
Huge thanks to Stewart for uploading the SVG. This quiz would not be here were it not for him!
Ok, so, my new objective: give to this awesome quiz enough visibility to help it to become featured. First step: include it in a "Have you missed this awesome quizzes?". I'm almost sure it could get some nominations with it. I'll start the redaction of this blog! This quiz has to be known...!
Thank you, it's amazing to know that you like my quizzes this much. I don't know if this can get featured (it can look extremely glitchy at times, and the page is quite slow), but I guess we'll cross that bridge when (and if) we get to it. Thanks for the support!
Ok, so, one day after the release, of the blog, it gained 5 nominations (but only 3 takes, it’s funny and it means what it means about the nominater... but we thank them...!). I was hoping on 7, but 5 isn’t too bad (it’s actually the second most nominated quizzes presented in the blog since the release). But it’s not enough to become featured. To stay in the high of the nomination ranking page, it wouldn’t be great to you get around 40 nominations. With 40 nominations, you would just have to wait a few weeks to be in the top five, and then become featured. I have a kind of « extreme solution », but I have to wait around of a month to do it, so, waiting it, I’ll try to share this quiz to my French friends who use JetPunk. Maybe you could get 2 or 3 nominations, we will see...
You're welcome! I actually didn't do nothing, excepting writing something and posting it on JetPunk, that's all. If it can help a very creative user as you, I'm very happy!
Good luck for the end of this adventure (because now it's almost sure you will get a very deserved star!) and good luck for the next ones! I'm waiting for your next works (and the announcement of the new Pokémon region...!)!
Thank you for your awesome quizzes, and good luck and continuation!
You made a similar comment under the first version of the quiz, right? I'll reply the same way: you're obviously correct, but this orientation looks better to me.
Quizzes like this require some abstraction anyway, which is why the map projection is orthographic and not geostationary, and the map isn't tilted by ~23°.
If I had an easy way to let the user decide which way the globe spins, I would do it, but CSS is not that interactive.
I forgot to say this under this quiz, but I am fairly sure it's not compatible with this quiz. I think syncing the dots with the rotation would require accessing the javascript of the feature, which is not possible (Stewart already made an exception by uploading such a heavy SVG)
Why are there so many "Countries of the World" quizzes going to get featured soon? Once you master Countries of the World, then there are all these quizzes that are basically the same exact thing.
You have to consider that JetPunk is mainly a geography website, and that for many users "countries of the world" is the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of a quiz. At the same time, quizzes aimed at niches are naturally not even remotely as likely to get people interested.
Also, while it's true that there are many variations of the "Countries of the World" quiz, I think a number of them are actually very interesting and creative! If you can recite every country by heart without any hint they indeed are all the same quiz basically, but part of the fun is putting yourself on the spot. I believe this quiz does a pretty good job in that regard, as you can only see a portion of the planisphere at a time, and for a short period.
If you are stating a fact, then yes, Eurasia is present in all but one frames. It makes sense since it's the biggest continental area, and also the one that develops East-West the most.
If you were instead trying to report a bug (as in "I can't see Eurasia in a frame where it should be there"), then it's a problem on your end
No, I think this is as good as it gets with this number of frames. Stewart and I just barely managed to reduce it enough for it to be uploaded to JetPunk (~2MB), changing the source code as well as using tools like svgomg.
The Quizmaster emailed me and said that the quiz is too glitchy to be featured, but he's open to hearing about other quizzes of mine that could be featured in its place. He hasn't replied back yet, but we'll see!
In any case, being in the upper positions of the nominated quizzes already gave this a lot of attention, which I'm happy about!
You are very positive, and I actually think you are right. I'm sure another amazing quiz you made will be featured! And more and more after. I'm a bit disapointed for you and all the work you did for this quiz, but it's true that many users discovered it when it was at the top of the the most nominated quizzesleaderboard.
So once again congrats for all the work you did, on this quiz and other ones too, and of course thank you a lot for all this beautiful content.
P.S.: I'm sure Pokémon Legend Arceus will have a beutiful map in 2022...! ;-)
Why, just WHY! It's not glitching for me, even though my internet is admittedly the worst in the community. It should at least get an honorable mention on the FP, if not featured.
This quiz is absolutely AMAZING! There are few quizzes that deserve to be on the front page more than this one, and I really mean it. It's too bad that it can't get featured, but I'm still glad so many people had a chance to see this. Good luck getting featured in the future!
This quiz had enough nominations to be featured, but QM decided against it since it's a bit glitchy. As with other quizzes that were deemed not featurable, it was removed from the nomination system
Since this quiz is not featured or spotlighted only people who stay on JetPunk a lot take it, so the average user taking this quiz simply knows geography better (or memorised more countries) than the average user taking the more general quiz

Crem: Yes.
I don't know what to say, exept huge congratulations!!! And nominated, sure.
But you will do it, it’s sure!
With it, the quiz should be at the top of the nominations leaderboard. I'm sure it's just a question of week, now.
Good luck for the end of this adventure (because now it's almost sure you will get a very deserved star!) and good luck for the next ones! I'm waiting for your next works (and the announcement of the new Pokémon region...!)!

I hope you still enjoyed the quiz!

(even with the slowness it's quite possibly one of the best quizzes on all of JetPunk)
Thank you for the compliment though!
Sorry for you... You really deserve it...
Maybe QM is trying to adapt it to JetPunk "correctly". Or did he said it was impossible to feature this quiz?
