Pottsville probably WAS the best team in the League in 1925, but they were apparently a little more clumsy in skirting NFL rules at the time than the Cardinals were.
No official NFL record that I can find attributes a 1925 Championship to Pottsville. While there were shenanigans by the Chicago Cardinals after their Dec. 6th loss to Pottsville, Pottsville's counter-shenanigans (playing the Notre Dame All-Stars in an unsanctioned game, followed by the Atlantic City Roses) were against league rules and got them suspended. As one authority put it, "The Cardinals didn't defy the league. Pottsville did."
Definitely a sleazy situation, though. At the time, to his credit, the Cardinals owner refused to accept the championship, since Pottsville beat them fair and square. It wasn't until years later under Charles Bidwell that the Cardinals began claiming the 1925 title.
I believe "Steam Roller" (w/o the "s" at the end) should be accepted. Took me a while to figure out why the correct answer wasn't being accepted. While they were later called the Steam Rollers/Steamrollers, earlier on their name was not pluralized. When they won the title, I believe they were still just the "Steam Roller".
Still, excellent idea for a quiz. Will never happen, but should definitely be featured, as these are all NFL (or in Akron's case, AFPA) Champions. I'll give it a forlorn nomination and hope for the best.
I'll update it soon and take that into account. I'll also be looking into other spellings/variations I missed. Thanks! I doubt it will ever make the front page given its difficulty for even massive fans of the league though.
