I thought that a Tsunami WAS an earthquake (that originates beneath the sea).

Tsunami is a wave following an oceanic earthquake, not an earthquake itself. This word comes from Japanese 津波, with 津 meaning port and 波 meaning wave, so tsunami literally means "port wave".
