Mets
Second clue: Nickname for New Englanders, especially used by people from the South (or foreigners who generally refer to Americans).

Joe DiMaggio
Also played for the second New York club (1951-1968). Nicknamed "The Commerce Comet". (Disney-Mouse Jacket).

He was a great sportsman as well, but rather at basketball. His father had always wanted him to be a baseball player, and after he died, the son would fulfill that wish. Ran home to basketball after less than two years.
Michael Jordan
From 1992 to 2008, baseball was part of the Summer Olympics. In 1992, 1996 and 2004, a little country won the gold medal. Being right on their doorstep, they frequently annoy Americans.¹
Cuba
The Japanese also love this sport. In 2003, they made a violent "so bad it's good movie", on which Wikipedia dryly comments: "Though the film is ostensibly about high school baseball rivalries, the amount of actual baseball in the film is fairly light. There are many scenes involving bats and balls, however."
