I could imagine Canada on basis of Leif Erikson, but USA? Also sort of missing the part of England/Scotland that was colonised by the vikings.

I think it might be referring to the U.S. Virgin Islands, which were bought from Denmark

St. Thomas and St. John were colonized by Denmark in the late 17th Century, St Croix was bought from France in 1733. During WWI they were sold to America in fear that the Central Powers could set up a sub. base.
