The Florida Panthers play in Sunrise, and apparently it's considered part of the greater Miami area. The team's offices are apparently in Miami as well. Didn't know that either until I tried MIami for the quiz and then looked it up.

doesn't surprise me, when the leafs play the panthers it's like a home game, way more leafs fans than panthers fans at their own arena

If you're going to exclude Miami because of Sunrise then you'll have to exclude Phoenix because of Glendale, Dallas because of Arlington, New York because of East Rutherford, and Washington because of Landover. Sunrise is in the Miami metro area, it's a perfectly valid answer.

I mean, they're not really sports anymore, are they? Certainly, as a European, I can't help but view them as highly orchestrated exercise-based entertainment optimised for the profits of franchise holders, rather than true sports.

RJF, no matter how many commercials there are it doesn’t make the sport less sporty. If you go in person suddenly 90% of the ads are gone. If you’re just playing at some random field with no ads whatsoever it’s still the same sport. You can’t just say they aren’t real sports because TV networks love money.

They had the Atlanta Thrashers from like 2000-2010. Nobody in Atlanta even knew they existed, so a Canadian group bought the team and moved it to Winnipeg, where it became the second (and current) incarnation of the Winnipeg Jets, who have become a very good team with a devoted following. The original Winnipeg Jets moved to Phoenix in like 1995 and became the Coyotes. They're finally creeping toward relevance, but their attendance figures are dreadful. Hockey in warm-weather places has historically been a tough sell.

Interestingly enough, there is only one still active team that called the Minneapolis metro home and was named for Minneapolis and not the state: the now-Los Angeles Lakers won the first 5 of their record 17 NBA Championships (a record shared with the Boston Celtics) as the Minneapolis Lakers.

As for the current 4 teams, ‘Minnesota’ takes fewer letters for 3 of the 4, and the Wild play in St. Paul anyway.

I know there's no football team in Milwaukee. I was just wondering if Green Bay would be close enough to count. With just a shade over 100,000 souls, Green bay is nowhere near big enough to support an NFL team without being near a major population center.

Ah, yes. Chicago the suburb of Milwaukee. On a side note though, I actually did once see Milwaukee grouped in the Chicago metro area, so it’s not that out of the question. Ridiculous, I know, but metro area populations are pretty arbitrary.

I mean, Boston is here despite the New England Patriots playing over 30 miles south in Foxborough. Miami is here despite the Florida Panthers (not Miami Panthers) playing in Sunrise some 40 miles North and much nearer to Ft. Lauderdale. I'm not arguing that either of these teams shouldn't be on the list (obviously they should), I was just curious where QM would draw the line. Apparently somewhere between 40 and 118 miles! ;)

@IsleAuHaulte - I haven't been to Northern Wisconsin, but I have been to Milwaukee and other parts of Southern Wisconsin and seen the Packers logo everywhere (don't recall seeing it on a stray cat, but it's certainly possible!)

The Los Angeles area has 8 teams (Rams, Chargers, Kings, Ducks, Dodgers, Angels, Lakers, Clippers). If we are strictly talking about L.A. proper, it would have 6 or less teams (Anaheim Angels and Ducks). But definitely not 7.

Easy trick. Take the sport out of the four you know the most about and guess cities from that sport. SInce it's one of the four sports, none of the options can't have a city in that sport.

The Raiders moved to Las Vegas, so the SF Bay Area is down to 5-teams; they still qualify for the quiz of course, but they’re now tied in 3rd place with 5 rather than alone in 3rd with 6. They now have:

SF - Giants, 49ers, and Warriors

Oakland - Athletics

San Jose - Sharks

Phoenix seems like the odd-one-out to me. Any truth/reason in that, or is it my mistake?

I guess the greater Phoenix Metropolitan Area has @4.5m people in it- so maybe it's larger than I assume. I guess Detroit is @3.5m.

And other cities seem much smaller, like SLC, and New Orleans.

Though Atlanta is @6m.

Maybe corruption has something to do with it.
