In 1974 Yorkshire was broken up into its ridings, each as a county authority on its own. So the West Riding of Yorkshire became West Yorkshire, same with North and South. But the east riding was renamed Humberside instead. Then in the more recent reorganisation (which brought back Rutland) it was decided to rename it back to the East Riding of Yorkshire. However the other Yorkshires just stayed North Yorksire etc.
The bureaucrats of London made a real mess of carving up the traditional counties such as Lancashire and Yorkshire. They made more individual areas to manage and therefore needing more and more bureaucrats to manage them.
Nice quiz, but a little more consistency on what's accepted would be nice. e.g. 'Wilt' and 'Oxford' (and others) are okay, but 'Shrop' and 'Lanca' (and others) both require the 'shire.'
