What factor(s) determines which city appears here? Some of these seem arbitrary to me.

They're all random, but I have tried to get them relatively spread out across the map and a range of difficulties. However this is all dependent on population density and the language spoken (very few Chinese cities begin with A for example)

Try Anyang. It's kind of very big and important.

i think the map are very well chosen because there is a very big diversity in the knowing that you need to have. Some capitals, some second city, some big city some cultural city, etc... Well done cool quiz

I was so proud of myself for remembering a city in Kazakhstan that began with 'A'. I typed Astana...and it wasn't it...pretty much ruined the rest of my day...

Astana is more central. Quite far away from Almaty. Almaty has a much longer history and I believe used to be the capital before Astana.

I can second this. Almaty was replaced by Akmola, which was renamed Astana. Now it is named Nur-Sultan, in honor of Nursultan Nazarbayev.

And now it's back to Astana.

Almaty is also bigger than Astana iirc, but Astana is the capital so that's why you remember it

Hardest one for me was on the US east coast. Thought the dot was north of Long Island, and couldn't come up with anything. Finally zoomed in, and all I could think of was Asbury Park.

Didn't know we could zoom in, and I had the same trouble. At the scale I saw it, it could have been Albany, Allentown, Alexandria, Annapolis, or Aberdeen (the other one).

Never would have gotten it if I didn't live 50 miles away. Its not even an important city . Why not move the dot to New York and ask for Albany?

Atlantic city might not be important in America, but is certainly far more famous worldwide than Albany.
