I know there are two, but couldn't you accept just "Novgorod" for Nizhniy Novgorod? Not like this quiz isn't hard enough already.

"Nizhny" is the short version that will work (and also various misspellings of Nizhny). I don't think anyone calls it Novgorod.

Novgorod is an older town (since 1999 officially called Veliky Novgorod). Nizhny Novgorod means New Novgorod.

Nizhny means "lower" and Novgorod means "new city". So it is Lower New City. Not Russian, but Slav of course :)

There are two cities:

- Novgorod, west of Moscow, closer to SPB, which is older, more famous, also called Novgorod Velikiy (Novgorod the Great) to distinguish it and since 1999 also oficially called Velikiy Novgorod

- Nizhny Novgorod, east of Moscow, formerly Gorky, much bigger nowadays, commonly called just Nizhny

As someone who used to live in Nizhny NovgorodI have to say that there is a huge difference between the two cities. They are completely different places. As for accepting the shortened word, that's perfectly acceptable as many of the people I knew and spoke with colloquially said "Nizhny" instead of "Nizhney Novgorod". I lived there for a year and a half and I'm excited each time see it on these geography quizzes.

Add Norwich, in England, although it isn't a large city, it is still a city.

Interesting. Completely clueless on the city in Serbia and never heard of Novi Sad. Nor apparently have iMaps, which took me to Munich until I insisted on the right country at least 😁

I accidentally misspelled Nanning with a 'j' after the first 'n'. So I guess that was the most helpful error I've ever made although I would have got Nanjing regardless...
