looking at the number of upvotes you got, you werent the only one. I am not sure what I thought, but I think I could have been convinced of it by someone.
Didn't realize that Johannesburg and Lesotho lined up that nicely - I'd assumed that going south from Johannesburg you'd have to pass over the South Pole before hitting another inhabited landmass.
Yeah. Try it on a globe, for perspective. Draw your line south from SA, stop at the south pole. Turn the globe horizontally 180 degrees. Then, continue your line.
You could also say that you end up in Vatican city travelling west from Rome, because from certain points in Rome that is actually the case. Furthermore, if you search for Rome on Google maps, the market is set at piazza Della reppublica, so I assume that's the central point. From there Vatican city actually is the first county to the west.
Fun quiz! You tricked me with Buenos Aires, I was guessing African countries. You almost tricked me with Johannesburg - I thought I was going to have to go around the south pole until I pictured where Johannesburg sat within South Africa and realized the correct answer.
I somehow often mix up milan and madrid though I now them, the words somehow just occupy the same memory slot in my head. So I was actually thinking of countries north of madrid first before I caught myself
There's a famous saying from a German soccer player when asked for which team he wants to play in the next season: "Milan or Madrid - the main thing is, it's in Italy." ("Mailand oder Madrid, Hauptsache Italien")
You're also reading the map wrong. After Lesotho and the rest of South Africa you go through Antarctica and end up in the South Pacific Ocean. Not over the top of the map.
See, I did the opposite and was guessing African countries. I'd heard once that Maine is actually the state closest to the African continent bc of the Earth's curvature, and so I messed myself up and didn't even guess Europe :-(
I think my brain has troubles processing that New York is so much south that it is only west to Portugal.
Just like I have troubles processing that most northern capitals are European. I dream of cold winters, snow,... Yet coming from Belgium, living in Germany NRW, having so little snow... I feel depressed each time I see parts of the world that are more in the South being covered in Snow.
I grew up being told that if we want more warmth and heat, we have to go South, so, it seems completely contra intuitive.
I guess stuff like the gulf stream plays a role, but I'll have to work on deconstructing that idea. :)
Got them all, but Johannesburg nearly had me, I tried Russia, Canada, U.S. and Denmark before I remembered that Johannesburg is in northern South Africa and thus north and not south of the answer.
Somehow I forgot that Cuba existed up until the very few seconds that was left of the quiz..

My initial guess was Spain as well :D
Edit: nvm just read the intro after the quiz.
