Nice! I think Marseille has lots its final s in current spelling, or something like that
+1
Level 83
Jul 27, 2016
Marseilles seems fairly common in England still, but you're right, I think the proper modern spelling is Marseille.
+6
Level 86

There is no "s" in the original French spelling, I don't know why it is sometimes added in English.
+2
Level 82
Oct 15, 2016
Because in French they love to add extraneous "s"s to the ends of words. Versailles, Orleans, Tours, Rennes, etc. Lyons and Marseilles are both common alternative spellings, though without the s now seems to be preferred.

I sometimes confuse it with the song, "La Marseillaise", so Marseille never looks right to me without an s. If I could speak French it probably wouldn't be a problem.

Kalbahamut, you are patronising in the extreme. The French spell Lyon and Marseille without an S, so that's how it is. The only people adding extraneous "S"s are the English!

This is a great quiz. The fact that I live in one of these towns may have helped me to reach 100%.

@CardinalSin: Yet the English don't put an S at the end of the name George but the French do.
+1

It's the English who dropped the S that is clearly present in the original Greek name Γεώργιος.

Aren't Limassol and Famagusta better-known Cypriot cities?

Yes. I think that's the point though.

Four of these cities are on the Adriatic and at least two on the Aegean

The Adriatic and the Aegean are part of the Med, just like the gulf of Aqaba is part of the Red Sea

In that case it should include Zadar - went there last month, fifth largest city in Croatia. Lovely place :)

Rome is not on the Mediterranean. Its a few miles inland.

Rome's centre is inland but the city extends to the coast. Benghazi is definitely on the coast.

Actually Benghazi is on the coast. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Benghazi,+Libya/@32.092989,20.004104,11z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x13831c55479eee2b:0xe497dfce76d293e0!8m2!3d32.0947711!4d20.1879106

Thanks for the info. I mentioned it because of its position on the map, which is not touching the coast at all.

Level 76

Depends on how you define Rome as a city, personally I would say Rome isn't on the sea and Ostia would be considered periphery. I tried googling M25 and GRA (ring-roads of London and Rome) and if use the ring-road as a limit you can say London is relatively closer to the sea than Rome
+1
Level 88
Oct 18, 2016
Greater London is mostly within the M25. The Metropolitan City of Rome Capital (which is not the same as Rome, but does have its own independent council) exapnds far beyond the ringroad and touches the sea. Perfectly acceptable to have Rome as an answer.

What do you mean by that? If you mean Hillary Clinton and Benghazi, probably because nobody cares on here about it, it's so irrevelant to the quiz, that no one will mention it.

Curious how after Hillary wasn't running for president anymore Congress suddenly didn't seem interested in having more hearings on the subject. I think they had only had 33 up to that point.

algeciras is a really important port, and is quite important for trade. the only reason gibraltar is more known is due to being independent, and following that logic monaco should be on here too instead of nice
