Answers are all a single word, and in any case there wouldn't be enough available letters in the grid to create "one mile".

But it doesn't say. It just says 'solve geographical answer' not one-word. "A mile" could most definitely work.

You have never heard of an inch?? Not knowing the exact measurement, sure. But never heard of it, sounds weird seeing as you can write a full english sentence. That is like an american saying they have never heard of a kilometer.
