Which countries have the greatest end-to-end distance across their mainland?
Distances are calculated as the longest possible straight-line distance across countries, excluding exclaves and offshore islands. That straight line might traverse land outside of the country
Maybe include that in the instructions? I think most quizzes on this site count Western Sahara as part of Morocco so it would be inconsistent, but please correct me if I'm wrong.
Please note the comment in red in the instructions. Greenland has its own national parliament, national flag, national everything really, with control over its own everything. For instance, it has voted to leave the EU while Denmark has independently remained within it.
No, it doesn't have control over its own everything. See, e.g., "http://www.economist.com/news/europe/21640224-falling-crude-prices-are-forcing-greenland-put-plans-split-denmark-independence-ice", which says that "areas including justice, defence and foreign affairs remain under Copenhagen’s thumb."
Interesting article. The Danes, as the article points out, are in control of foreign affairs and defence (one wonders where the Greenlandic coastguard would invade otherwise), though the 2009 referendum determined that Greenland government will be given significant autonomy in determining foreign affairs; with many aspects of foreign affairs policy no longer be linked to Danish policy; and control of the militarised Greenlandic Coast Guard transferred to the Government of Greenland. In my book that's independent enough to qualify Greenland as a country. (Also note Greenland has control over its own policing, judicial system, company law, accounting, auditing, mineral resource activities, aviation, law of legal capacity, family law and succession law, aliens and border controls, the working environment, and financial regulation and supervision).
No Jerry, they did not vote for independence, they voted for greater autonomy over their province, very much like we do in Canada. This is what is referred to as a confederation, and no, BC does not negotiate seperate treaties nor does it have it's own navy, and niether does Greenland.
Each province in Canada has its own flag, but we are not seperate from Canada. The provinces control the resources within it's borders, just like Greenland voted for.
Yes, I've read Matt Rosenberg's articles on that website - of which the one you link to is one - and he sets up criteria for deciding whether it's a country that in my opinion are (a) way overblown and (b) inconsistently applied. So I take his opinions with a grain of salt.
I Think Greenland should be an independent country given how big it is. I didn't guess it either cuz I've been doing the country quiz and its not on there.
It would have the seventh-smallest population of any country in the world, putting in right in the mix with places like St. Kitts and Nevis and Liechtenstein.
Yes but not a foreign or sovereign nation, it's only inhabitants are a handful of scientist on about 6 month shifts and a huge amount of penguins(SO CUTE!!)
I don't think "197 to 205" is clear enough... Better ways to indicate you'll be counting Greenland. Just say "autonomous territories also counted" or something like that. Idk. Maybe take it off if you can't fit it. "Dependent territories counted separately" would also key us in
If you take the Countries 197 to 205 quiz it'll be clear enough! And in any case, Greenland isn't an "autonomous territory" or a "dependent territory".
If Greenland isn't considered a country for every other quiz about countries on this site, then it shouldn't be considered a country for this one. Irrespective of any cryptic notes in red.
Cryptic means "mysterious in meaning; puzzling; ambiguous", and the instruction in red is precisely the opposite of that, namely bleeding obvious. Please also read the responses to Stauf00 above.
Im confused about the rules. Idk if it wouldve qualified either way, but would Vietnam be measured in its full length from Hanoi-ish to Saigon-ish, or only a straight line that is entirely within the country???
I didn't understand the instruction in red, and since JetPunk quizzes generally consider Greenland part of Denmark, I assumed it was the same here. You might consider putting in Greenland yourself and shading it grey as some answers are done in other quizzes. This would save a lot of us time trying to guess other long countries incorrectly.
Good quiz, except for including Greenland. Seems like a random thing to include. If it's just because it's a large landmass, then it should include Antarctica. But the fact that it's by far the least guessed answer, despite the caveat and it being included in the picture, suggests that maybe it should be left off.
Each province in Canada has its own flag, but we are not seperate from Canada. The provinces control the resources within it's borders, just like Greenland voted for.
