Great quiz! According to Wikipedia, the Kankakee River has 7 square miles in southwestern Michigan in its drainage, and the Kankakee flows into the Illinois, which flows into the Mississippi. Thus, Michigan should be considered a correct answer.

Thanks, quiz updated. It's astonishing how this area, so close to the Great Lakes which drain eastwards to the St Lawrence, still drains south into the Mississippi.
