I missed some that I knew, and I missed some that I knew the character I wanted, just couldn't remember the first name (Mrs Dursley & Mrs Malfoy as 2 examples). Kreacher I just couldn't remember. I guess "that elf from Sirius' house" wouldn't work? Haha. Fun quiz.

Makes since that this quiz would exist. They already had a similar one on the Bible.
+4
Level 77
Mar 5, 2015
I missed your point completely. They have lots of similar quizzes here on characters from other books or movies. Why would you specify the Bible?
+3
Level 83
Mar 5, 2015
Quizzes like this? On the front page? I can't think of any other than those two.

This seems appropriate to me because of the many similarities. Overlong, overrated tomes. Elaborate works of fiction with many pages and many characters but questionable literary merit; but nonetheless legion of enthusiastic fans. And I sort of wonder if in 2000 years or so they'll be similarly regarded by history. ...either because of Potter's growing significance, or the Bible's diminishing relevance and drift toward the realm of mythology, I intentionally left the comment open for interpretation.

and "like this" = quizzes on the top 100 characters in a work of fiction/book ordered by number of mentions found in the text.

That was a fine explanation, Kal.

@kal: You should maybe edit your original comment. Took me a while to realize you made a typo, since you rarely do. The comment didn't "make since" to me me at first. ;) Great parallels between Harry Potter and the Bible, though!

+3
Level 81
Mar 5, 2015
If you check the source link above, it gives the total number of mentions for the top 200, but just to answer your questions:

Mrs. Norris = 59 (which would put her at #102)

Rowena Ravenclaw = 28

Helga Hufflepuff = 14

Bloody Baron = 24

+1
Level 81

I wonder if this is only looking at actual names being used. I imagine if "Voldamort's mother" or "Voldamort's snake" counted as being mentioned, then both of those characters would would beat out Morfin or Bob Ogden. But, nevertheless, it was a lot of fun. I can't believe some of the ones that I missed. Thanks Quizmaster.

The films don't show OR name half of these characters. You're better off reading the books ;)
+3
Level 67
Jun 16, 2019
well that sounds like an argument not to read the books. Dozens of names that dont really have impact on the plot. More names is not allways better. Especially when names are thrown left and right without a decent background story and later suddenly it is about "name" and you think who of the many names I ve read was that again. I have had that happen often, in many books.
+1
Level 47
Apr 22, 2022
I've read the books 5+ times and watched the movies 2-3 times, and in my opinion the books are better. I read the books before I watched the movies, and the stuff they left out really surprised me. I understand that they're on a budget and have to get to things quickly, but it was still surprising. I highly recommend the books, and the movies are still great nonetheless. It's an awesome, well-developed series :)

+1
Level 47
Apr 22, 2022
While Marge wasn't actively present in the series very much, she was mentioned a few times by Harry when he was thinking about his summers at the Dursley's. You also have to think about the scolding he got for breaking the Statute of Secrecy, which a few people talked to him about. It does seem very strange that she was mentioned more than the Fat Lady, Madam Rosemerta and Ms. Norris.
