China's largest island = Hainan

Technically, China's largest island is Taiwan. Don't know why Jetpunk recognises it as a country, since less than 20 countries actually recognise it. It's just a little bigger than Hainan!

Probably because Jetpunk follows Wikipedia and the definition for sovereign nations in international law and not the political claims of China or the strategical and economical interests of the UN with China being a permanent member of the Security Council...

The only reason it isn't officially recognized is because no one wants to start another world war. China has no real ownership over Taiwan, and Taiwan functions as a completely independent country.

Well, as far as I'm concerned the RoC is the 'real' China and the PRC are just pretenders, so in a way, Taiwan is the largest island in China.

'Volcanic island' refers to islands that were formed as a result of volcanic activity, of which Iceland is the largest. Honshu is larger, but not of volcanic origin :)

"Largest island in the Indian Ocean"

Hmm, Seychelles? Nope.

Maldives? **Bzzz**

Can't be Mauritius, right? Nope.

Ummm, oh, what's that one that sits between Madagascar & the coast of Africa? Yeah, Comoros. That's GOT to be it! **Bzzzz**

Is New Guinea not considered a volcanic island? It has volcanoes and is bigger than Iceland. Can anyone clear up my confusion?
+1
Level 69
May 29, 2020
'Volcanic island' refers to islands that were formed from volcanic activity (of which Iceland is the largest) as opposed to islands with volcanoes on them.

Trying to think of an island with a volcano that *wasn't* formed by that volcano.
+3
Level 69
May 29, 2020
Not to be this guy but, there are plenty, e.g. islands which broke off from continents (such as Madagascar) or islands formed through subduction (e.g. many of the Japanese and Indonesian islands).

Just because tectonic activity was involved does not mean it was *formed* by a volcano, it just means there might be a volcano located on that island. Those formed through subduction are likely to be prone to a lot of volcanic activity.

Level 75
May 29, 2020
This was the only one I didn't get. Not sure if my confusion is warranted, but I was looking for an island formed by a single volcanic eruption. Then, I assumed it would have to be sitting on a rising tectonic plate. Anyway, I didn't get it.

Wouldn’t the biggest island in the US be Big Island, not Hawaii, since Hawaii is a set of islands? For example, the question “island that contains the most pupulosu urban area” is Honshu, not Japan, because Honshu is the singular island name while Japan is the set of islands.
