You are slightly mistaken in your judgment, considering that the fact that Afghanistan did not boycott the games is funny. In the West, many have the misconception that the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was a war of the USSR against Afghanistan, no, it was a war of the USSR and Afghanistan against the Mujahideen. In addition, if we omit the fact that the government in Afghanistan was overthrown (rather pro-Soviet) and replaced with a more pro-Soviet one, then it was more likely an intervention in general.
