lots of people put mayonnaise on french fries. Pretty much everyone outside of the United States actually, though, it's not like all of them do. I couldn't figure that one out though I've seen it many times (not in Belgium, but in the Netherlands..... and the UK, and France, and Poland, and Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain, and Korea, etc)

You know, they talk of french fries but it's really a belgian speciality. I do believe that the idea of putting mayonnaise on them comes from us too.

I don't know of anyone who puts mayonnaise on chips in the UK, but I don't think you would be laughed at.

Laugh away malbaby this Brit cannot stand tomato ketchup on chips, the Dutch cured him of this disgusting practice. Mayonnaise it is. In fact in Dutch they say "chips with" to mean with mayonnaise, otherwise nothing added.

sycophantic US move fanatic??? What US movie has people eating mayo on their fries? Most Americans have never even heard of this concept and would find it totally bizarre. I never saw it myself until I went overseas for the first time and I remember back then thinking it was extremely weird. Meanwhile, the many Brits who worked for the British company that I myself worked for for years in Saudi Arabia all put mayo on their french fries. So not sure what you are talking about.

Level 75

Kal, you beat me to it. Malbaby, can you explain what you meant by your comment? All you will see in an American movie is someone putting ketchup on their fries, with an occasional Southerner dipping them in milk gravy. (Popular among some of my family members, too.)

Plenty of people in the UK put mayo on chips, especially when they are sold as 'fries' rather than chips, like in most fast-food outlets.

The real answer to "what Belgians put on chips" is, as anyone who has been to a Belgian friterie knows, "basically anything". Last time I had chips there I had them topped with stoofvlees (stew).

Chips or fries can take any number of sauces, either on the side or as a topping. To state that something is weird, just because it is outside your own experience is plain silly. Mayo is great with fries, but then so is tomato ketchup, and so is salt and vinegar, and so are cheese curds and gravy...

The irony of this is that Georges Simenon (Belgian) is somewhere around the 6th best-selling author of all time - and he wrote largely in the same genre as Christie. Inspector Maigret might not be as well known in the English-speaking world, but I'd bet he's bigger in Belgium.

I think the clue for the Belgian colony should be adjusted. I first typed "DRC," which is the former Belgian Congo's present day name, in abbreviated version. I then typed Rwanda. I ultimately did type Congo; didn't bother with Burundi. Given that there are three countries in Africa that are former Belgian colonies, I think this needs some rephrasing.
