Tornado, hurricane, cyclone... forgot what one of those things was called in that part of the world.

Can you accept hurricane & cyclone please? They mean the same as "typhoon"
+10
Level 75
Jun 13, 2014
Except for their location. In the Atlantic and eastern Pacific Oceans they are hurricanes, in the Indian Ocean they are cyclones, but in the western Pacific they are typhoons. Tornadoes are a completely different critter.

@ander that is not definitive. In Australia (western Pacific) they are called cyclones and we get them quite regularly.

That's like saying it's not water because someone is drinking a glass of the same stuff in Kyrgyzstan. Then we have to call it something different just to be "right" to whoever arbitrarily made up a silly rule for everyone else.

@someone that is how things usually work though, that why we call a chair a chair and not a couch, eventhough you can sit on both. Why we call one thing rain and another snow, while it is both precipation etc. (it is actually hard to find words where those distinction aren't there)

(but if I was in charge of naming things, I don;t think I would make the distinction in this case, but, it is how the language evolved.)

Regardless, they all mean the same thing, so they should be accepted answers for that question.

Comjag, I stand corrected about Australia - I should have said northwestern Pacific. They are all tropical cyclones, but in the northwestern Pacific they are called typhoons. It all depends on how specific QM wants the answer to be. All typhoons are tropical cyclones, but not all tropical cyclones are typhoons.

@someone2018 No it's not. Water is still called water in Kyrgyzstan, but tropical cyclones are called different things in different parts of the world.

They are still technically the same though... If you bring 'chips' into America, they don't suddently transform into 'fries'. They are the same thing, just called differently.

I'm a little disappointed that you chose to add people like Imelda Marcos and Manny Pacquiao in the quiz over someone like Agapito Flores or other people who actually made the world a better place.

Person who some Filipinos erroneously believe to be the inventor of the fluorescent lamp? Agapito Flores.
+6
Level 62
Jul 14, 2020
Agapito Flores did nothing lmao. People say he "invented" the fluorescent lamp, but fluorescence was discovered 40 years before he was born by Frenchman Henri Becquerel, and the first patent for the fluorescent lamp was in 1901, when Flores was just 4 years old. Just some propaganda started by Filipinos... lots of countries like the Phillipines (Indonesia, Brazil, etc.) make up stories saying that they, not the blasted western world invented things.

So, in short, if you put Agapito Flores on the list, you might as well put every electrician in Luzon on the list.

Why the beef with Manny? He's not even that bad of a person. Plus he's way more recognizable than anyone you mentioned. Even if you don't watch boxing there's a chance you heard of Manny.

The Philippines are beautiful (outside of the cities anyway) and the people are among the nicest you’ll ever meet. They do however suffer from a national naivety, an almost childlike credulity which is cleverly manipulated on social media. This explains how they vote en masse for people like Marcos, Duterte, Pacquiao etc.
