I got Pele and Messi... then got Muller only because I was guessing common surnames. I missed Maradona by one "a", and missed Donovan because scanning the list of countries I didn't see the USA was on the list. Never heard of all but 4 of these guys.

You ought to learn about the history of the game you think you know so much about then... The game has been called soccer since the 19th century, and was just as common a word in Britain for the game as the name "football" for most of the 20th century. Many of the game's top players had the word "soccer" in the title of their autobiographies (e.g. George Best). Watch some old Pathe news videos of matches - the word "soccer" is used a lot.

That one does stick out like a sore thumb. The rest all ‘big’ European clubs and or very famous players. Whilst Napoli are a decent side and Mertens is a great player, both are probably a level below everyone else on the list.

Though having looked at some other big clubs, AC Milan and Ajax etc, it looks like their too scorers are less well known.

Napoli used to be on that quiz for the very easy Diego guess.

Now it's a little bit more interesting for the sake of the quiz, but Diego pretty much flooded the newsreel when Dries got the record over Hamšík, as he adores him, so a lot of soccer fans have heard about this.
