When I looked at the map, I straight away looked at the big dots which engulfed 1/4 of Mexico and most of South East China!

It's amazing how New Delhi is the only place in India - and then you look at Guangzhou, which is far, far bigger and is the only place to be found in the most populous country in the world.

Great idea! But please accept Port-aux-France for Port-aux-Francais and King Edward Point for Grytviken. Thanks!

Extremely interesting – this is exactly my kind of quiz. Surprising how only one city in Siberia and no cities in Canada or southern South America qualify. Also would've expected more in the Pacific. How did you compile this? Did you include all the Antarctic stations? I'm having a hard time believing only McMurdo makes it in.

Thanks for your comment! I did the quiz a long time ago, basically with a list of cities from geonames.org which includes population, latitude, longitude... Then had Excel calculate the distance to the closest largest city. I think mcmurdo was the only place listed with population greater than 0 in Antarctica. Large areas can end up having no cities because for example Stanley in West Falkland will be smaller than Punta Arenas, then Punta Arenas will be smaller than Comodoro Rivadavia, this will be smaller than Bariloche, this will be smaller than Buenos Aires... I kind of made this up so there might be mistakes but I hope it explains the concept.

On the chart it says Guangzhou's distance from a larger city is 40000 km. What city is this? :)
