Please accept Tobago for Trinidad and Tobago. It's the name of the game for this quiz after all.

would you accept kingdom for UK, or America for USA, or africa for south africa ? no, so stick to the whole name of the country then...
+51
Level 66

But Trinidad is accepted which isn't the whole name... As for your examples, these are completely different as Tobago is one of the islands that the country is named after and is equally important as Trinidad.

Looking at them on a map... no offense to toboggans, but they aren't exactly equal...

It's like calling the UK "Great Britain"

Personally I'd accept (and Jetpunk itself does, in fact, accept) America for USA. It follows the pattern of "[description] of [place]" which is used by many countries such as the Republic of France, the Kingdom of Spain and the historic United States of Colombia. Also, people do actually say "America" when talking about the country.

The actual full title of the UK is "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland", so your example would be like accepting "Republic" for the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

America, absolutely. Tobago, probably not, but Trinidad yes. Africa is a continent not a country. United Kingdom is already shortened from the full name, going to just "Kingdom" seems to be taking it a bit far. Though the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which you probably shorten to Saudi Arabia all the time, and other people often shorten to Saudi, and in Arabic is frequently called simply Saudia, does go by the short name "the Kingdom."

on a weird quibble I have with all jetpunk quizzes, I would like 'rsa' to be accepted for South Africa and 'ksa' for Saudi Arabia. It would make life so much easier and everybody knows what those mean.

Saying "America" for United States is more like if many people said "Europe" when they mean "Moldova". It would still be weird, even if the whole world did it.
+6
Level 68

...except that the whole world does do it. The US is commonly referred to as America, and is a valid type-in.

yeah, no one refers to panama or canada as "America," people refer to the USA as America.

I guess the "whole world" that refers to the US as America is the same "whole world" that participates in the "World Series".

What even is this comment? lol. Of course the whole world commonly refers to the US as "America". Ah, but you're not making a genuine point, are you? You're being pedantic and subtly Anti-American because that is in fashion. It just wouldn't be Jetpunk without comments like this!

If you are going to accept Trinidad, also accept Tobago. Most people will say Trinidad, but it doesn't affect those people, and will satisfy the minority group that type Tobago, also.

If they're going to do that at all I could see how it would make sense on this quiz, but only on this quiz.

I agree, for this quiz 'Tobago' seems a valid answer.
+2
Level 66
Dec 17, 2019
The country isnt called tobago so I dont see what the argument is about. (Yes it accepts just trinidad, but that is because people are lazy and like shortcuts). It would be a slightly different matter is both trinidad and tobago were constituent countries of a sovereign nation.

would you accept "the grenadines" on a quiz called countries starting with "t"? I doubt it. Same with countries starting with an h. (Bosnia) herzegovina would not be a valid answer.

+1
Level 66

There is a difference in starting or ending with a letter yes, but personally I still wouldnt, the quiz asks for the country, not the last word of a country.
+2
Level 88
Jan 19, 2020
Because most people call it Trinidad, but have have never heard of Tobago.

Are we getting repetitive yet?

+2
Level 40
Dec 9, 2020
Yes, accepting "Tobago" Is like accepting "Grenadines" For St. Vincent and the Grenadines, or accepting "Nevis" for St Christopher and Nevis.

Say you were talking to a friend about the United Kingdom, and they just called it "Wales" or "Northern Ireland?" That wouldn't make sense, would it?

Another case: Say you were talking about Brunei. If they called it "Negara" or "Darussalam" you'd be confused, would you not?

The point is that "Tobago" is not a common shorthand of Trinidad and Tobago, similar to the fact that "And" is not a common shorthand for Antigua and Barbuda.

I have that often, all sort of things pop up. That why I really didnt want to study the capitals and us states. Cause enough random geography ( and sometimes not geography ) names come up in my mind allready.

The more nfo there is in your head, sometimes, the more stuff wants to come out..

Bursting at the seams.. "C.." "Colombia: ow ow ow me me !" "no..... capitals starting with c..." "Colombia: ow.."

I like quizzes that force even the more experienced jetpunkers to suddenly think of something they know from a slightly different angle. I mean, I can usually name all the countries that start with any given letter very quickly, but asking for end letters still throws me off. And that's fun.

Fun quiz, but the time is waaaay too short. Yes after I have taken it the first time. I can write them all down in 10 sec. But for the first run, it would be nice to have time to think. I have to think through the whole world to get it. That takes about 3-4 min for me. :)
