Clue could also be a 'tip'?

A tip in the sense you're thinking of is more like a piece of advice, rather than a clue.

Right you are. But then again, isn't that also the case with the currently accepted answer? Anyway, this is not a problem, I was just thinking out loud.

Right! And here's the funny thing: since 'hint' has both meanings, if 'hint' were the clue, the answer could be either 'clue' or 'tip', but since 'clue' is the clue, the answer can only be 'hint'. Make sense?!

Spotted "Mythos" in the puzzle right away, was disappointed it wasn't an answer.

"Pinto" could also work for small horse, couldn't it?

I had not heard of that word before! Looking it up, though, it seems to relate to the particular coat colour of a horse or pony, rather than the size of the animal.

Pinto is in fact a color scheme of a horse, not a reference to its size.

"Minuscule" is spelled incorrectly. While language can evolve, often due to an "onslaught of wrong," most sources agree that has not yet occurred for the word minuscule.

For about the first minute I thought all answers had to be Boggle style, letters needing to be connected.
