You might have been thinking of "caret" which is a marking, or "carat" which is a quantity of gold in jewellery etc

I ran into a little bug on this one, I accidentally thought all the letters were there for operatic for 7, but it accepted it because it was the answer for 8. Unfortunately because of this it added a V to the grid, but didn't reveal what actually should have been the 8th letter, meaning I spent a couple of minutes trying to guess an impossible answer for 8.
