Late Cretaceous: The Hell Creek Dinosaurs

You may not have heard of the Hell Creek geologic formation that spreads across Wyoming, Montana, and the Dakotas, but you have most certainly heard of the dinosaurs that have been found fossilized in the rocks there. This metatherian mammal was not much bigger than a large North American opossum, it was a very large mammal by Cretaceous standards, likely hunting dinosaur hatchlings and other small vertebrates. It is seen doing so in the BBC series Walking with Dinosaurs.

Now these trees only grow in a narrow part of Argentina and Chile, but their spiny leaves have been found fossilized in rocks from Hell Creek, showing they once covered the western hemisphere.

This is the most well-known of the large tank-like dinosaurs that lived in Hell Creek. They are known for their boney armour covering their backs and their boney club tails.
