Alaska Fun Facts

+1

Part 3 of 50. This time we go into the 49th state, Alaska.

- The state flag was designed by a 13 year old. (He got a D on the project)

- The state population density is only at one person per square mile. (If Manhattan Island had the same density as Alaska, then they would only have 16 people on the entire island.)

- Alaska has the highest percentage of men than any state at only 52%.

- Alaska is only 50 miles away from Russia. The closest country to the United States that we don't border.

- The average high in the city of Fairbanks in January is 1 degree.

- Russia sold Alaska to the US for 2 cents an acre.

- Alaska is the only state that you can type on one row of the keyboard.

Edit: For some reason it won't let me post until 48 hrs. after the Alabama one.

what if we built a bridge from Alaska to Russia. Then, one could drive from Miami to Cape Town.

If we built a road across the Darien Gap then we could drive from Puerto Williams to Murmansk then to Cape Town.

Technically we could build a bridge from Alaska to Russia that wouldn't let us drive from Miami to Cape Town by connecting the Diomedes instead of the actual mainlands.

Its not impossible just impractical, the costs of building the infrastructure far outweigh the benefits.

Exactly. Especially when you consider flying from NYC to Anchorage is cheaper than driving.

It's a great blog - however I must point out Alaska is actually only 2.4 miles to Russia (including islands). Or are you only including the mainland?

No. Austin is right. It is 55 miles, where did you get that measurement from?

The Alaskan island of Little Diomede is only 2.4 (or so) miles to the Russian island of Diomede. It's even in the facts page.
