- California is the only state that has hosted the Summer and Winter Olympics.

Wow! These facts are incredible! I know about General Sherman, and population of Canada VS California, but I never imagine that the motto of California is Eureka! I thinked that was only an expression used by scientists... very nice!

It's a bit of a stretch to call it once independent - it was just some unrecognized breakaway state, where the "government" just controlled a little bit of land north of San Francisco.
