What if the Portuguese Empire Reunited Today?

+5

At its territorial golden age in the 16th and 17th century, the Portuguese Empire was the second most powerful and influential country in the Americas and Europe just remaining behind Spain. It controlled a massive part of South America, Encompassing all or some of countries such as Brazil, Guyana, Suriname, Venezuela, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, and many more! They also controlled a significant portion of Southern Africa encompassing the entire countries of Angola and Mozambique. The Portuguese also controlled many island colonies including Cape Verde, The Algarves, and Sao Tome and Principe. In this blog, I am going to explain what would happen if the Portuguese Empire reunited today.

Population and Land

As always, the first thing I am going to talk about is the population and land of this newly created empire. To start off, a total of 24 countries would lose all or some of their territory to the Portuguese most of which would be tiny ports and small enclaves within them. The empire would mostly dominate in South America and Southern Africa but it would also remain powerful in the Indian Subcontinent with several territories within India and Western Sri Lanka. The Population would also be gargantuan at a massive 245,000,000 people! Brazil alone would account for about 75% of this as its current population is already 210,000,000. This would be enough to put it in 5th place, in terms of population, putting it ahead of Pakistan (225,000,000) but still well behind Indonesia (265,000,000). The Portuguese would also have a massive Exclusive Economic Zone taking over all of Brazil, Angola, and Mozambique's EEZ and also small parts of other countries. The Capital City would most likely be Lisbon as it is already the capital of modern-day Portugal and was the historical capital anyway. However, this would by far not be the largest city within the empire's borders. Now, São Paulo, in Brazil, would be the largest with a gargantuan Urban Population of 22,600,000 compared to Lisbon's puny 2,800,000. Here would be the rest of the top 10 largest cities within the empire:
  1. Sao Paulo (22,600,000)
  2. Rio de Janeiro (13,300,000)
  3. Luanda (8,450,000)
  4. Belo Horizonte (5,050,000)
  5. Porto Alegre (4,150,000)
  6. Brasília (4,050,000)
  7. Recife (3,850,000)
  8. Fortaleza (3,725,000)
  9. Salvador (3,625,000)
  10. Curitiba (3,450,000)
(Another big thanks to GrandOldMan for putting the list together)
Amount of land which the Portuguese Empire ever controlled

GDP and Money

The next thing we need to think about the reunited Portuguese Empire is the wealth of it. The Nominal GDP of the Empire would be around $2.789 Trillion which is enough to put it in 9th place in front of other wealthy nations such as Canada ($1.657 Trillion), and South Korea ($1.523 Trillion), but remaining just behind Italy ($2.065 Trillion) and well behind France ($2.551 Trillion). The GDP per capita wouldn't be as impressive though due to the quite poor areas of the empire like Angola and Mozambique. As a result, the nominal per capita income would be around $11,383 which is quite good compared to other recreated empires I have covered in the series so far. This would be enough to put it in 64th place being just ahead of Malaysia ($11,340) but also just behind Russia ($11,460). The Portuguese would also find themselves in possession of a significant portion of the world's Gold with territory in the Gold-Rich Countries of Angola and Mozambique.

Military Size

The last thing we need to think about is the Military Size of the newly created empire. The Portuguese would have around 750,000 active-duty personnel and around another 1,600,000 troops in reserves. Altogether, a fully mobilized Portuguese Military would be about 2,350,000 troops which is a massive amount and is around the same size as a fully mobilized United States military but slightly larger.
Looking at everything, the Portuguese Empire would be a huge contender in the major European powers and has enough force to compete on the world stage. As always, it is impossible to accurately predict what they would do, reunited, in the new world. This blog in the series was requested by MG17 so feel free to ask if you want to see another reunited empire in the series! Also, please let me know what you think in the comments or if there is anything else you want me to include in the blog. And Finally, thank you all so much for reading and.... Goodbye!

That list of cities is just wrong. The state of Goa in India doesn't even have two million people. Here's a better list:

  1. São Paulo (22,600,000)
  2. Rio de Janeiro (13,300,000)
  3. Luanda (8,450,000)
  4. Belo Horizonte (5,050,000)
  5. Porto Alegre (4,150,000)
  6. Brasília (4,050,000)
  7. Recife (3,850,000)
  8. Fortaleza (3,725,000)
  9. Salvador (3,625,000)
  10. Curitiba (3,450,000)

By the way, for this list, I've only included the Portuguese Empire as it was nice and neatly: Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, and East Timor.
