Who has the most wins per world championship in Formula 1?

A few weeks ago after Lewis Hamilton equaled Michael Schumacher all time record for most wins at the 2020 Eiffel Grand Prix, I got me thinking, surely by the time Hamilton inevitably gets his 7th title, he will have more wins than Schumacher but the same amount of titles. So I thought about who actually had the most wins for every championship title. I brought up the idea to a friend, they worked out the averages and I have to say, I'm actually very surprised at the results.

Before you read any further I want to let you know that I have made a quiz on this, which you can find by clicking my name at the top I think, and there will be spoilers for that in this blog post.

So with that little disclaimer out of the way, lets talk about the results that we came up with. taking the top spot is none other than British legend, Nigel Mansell. I never had the privilege to watch him race in Formula 1, and I feel like a lot of new F1 fans have never really heard of him. But boy was he good. I think he is up there for one of the most underrated champions of all time, after all he raced against some of the greats like Nelson Piquet, Alain Prost and even went head to head with Ayrton Senna. With just one championship to his name and an amazing 31 wins, Mansell took an obvious average of 31 wins per championship.

Next we have Nico Rosberg who I once again feel, is massively underrated. After all he is one of very few drivers to actually beat Lewis Hamilton as a teammate and he beat him to the title back in 2016. Rosberg picked up wins from 2012 right up to his shock retirement in 2016 but was only able to win the championship once with gave him a very good average of 23 races for every title he won. And a quick fun-fact, after the Japanese Grand Prix, he actually held the record for most wins without a championship, beating Stirling moss who took 16 wins but then as we've mentioned, won the title just a few races later.

Now, I'm not going to write about every Champion in history, because that would be a very long blog post I think and I'm sure many of you reading this probably don't want to here me go on and on for ages about drivers you ay or may not have heard of before so instead I will just write about some of the big names of formula one. Fernando Alonso is the first person on the list who has multiple championships, winning in 2005 and 2006. He narrowly missed out on the 2007 title with McLaren and the 2010 and 12 titles with Ferrari. Having very competitive cars for so many years but only calming the title twice meant that with 32 wins and 2 championships, he places 5th on our list. Ayrton Senna, Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher, all very good drivers, separated by just 0.7 of a win. but with Schumacher having 4 more titles than Senna and 3 more than Vettel, I was quite surprised to see him so far up the list and for me, its a good way to show how many wins he got over his career. The eagle eyed among you will have noticed that I skipped Hamilton and thats because he will definitely pick up title number 7 by the end of the year but who knows how many wins he will have after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The last driver I will talk about from this list will be The great Niki Lauda. A driver with on of the most inspirational stories not just in Formula 1 but arguably in sporting history. he took 2 championships in 1975 and 77 with Ferrai before retiring in 1979. Amazingly he came back with McLaren and picked up his third and final title in 1984 by just half a point. He remains the only driver who has won a championship with both Ferrari and McLaren, the two most successful teams in history. with an incredible 25 wins he comes in 20th in our list with an average of 8.3 wins per championship.
