Cool! I assumed that Antarctica only had a handful of research stations, so I'm surprised that there are well over 100! I'm also surprised that there was one open as early as the 1910s (if I remember correctly, the first person to reach the South Pole was 1912, right?).

Thanks! Yes, it surprised me as well. But a lot of them are either closed or temporary, ie only open in summer. Currently there are around only 70 active year-round stations.

Antarctica was first spotted in 1820 and the first station was established by the Scots in 1903, which was transferred to Argentina next year. That has been the oldest functioning station on the continent. And Amundsen reached the South Pole in 1911 (got that from Wikipedia, I didn't know about it either 😅)
