WHAT IS BELO HORIZONTE?

In a nutshell...Belo Horizonte is a modern and bustling city in southeastern Brazil with a population of 2.7 million people. Meaning "Beautiful Horizon", it was founded as a Portugese city in the 1700s, and has a fascinating story. Let's learn more...but like always...divide it into categories! Founded by João Leite da Silva Ortiz in 1701, he claimed it for Portugal and the city grew ever since! However, the name didn't turn into Belo Horizonte until 1906. However...something special happened to the city in the 40s. Oscar Niemeyer planned a big neighborhood in the city which contributed to the growth of the city. Today, the city is a big commerce and art city of Brazil.

The city has about 2.5 million people, with 59% being catholic. The city has 46% white people, 41% Pardo, which is a mix, similar to mestizo, and 10% is black. Much of the demographics have to do with the past history. Although some part of Belo Horizonte is full of slums, the city has been working on its tourism industry and infrastructure and is succeeding. Fun fact, the city has 41 pubs/bars!!!! Now for the physical geography...the city generaly has a worm climate with its highest temperatures at like october. The Koppen classification system classifies it as

tropical savanna climate.

The city is full of parks, zoos, and minerals under the ground!
