⚔️EARLY BATTLES OF THE WAR⚔️
Brought to you by MrBLOGGER
Many events including Slaves rights and seats in Congress were the cause to war. When South Carolina seceded, 10 other states decided to join them to form the Confederacy. What followed would be the bloodiest war in American history-something no side was prepared for. This blog will show you the major battles starting from the first fire at Fort Sumter all the way to Antietam. Enjoy!
FORT SUMTER
Location: Coast of South Carolina
Winner: Confederacy
Casualties/Deaths: 0
Significance/Information: Fort Sumter was the first battle of the Civil War. The South invaded the significant fort and Major Anderson of the Union was forced to surrender the fort. P.G.T Beauregard was the Southerner who invaded. The war had officially started.
BULL RUN/ MANASSAS
Location: Prince William County, Virginia
Winner: Confederacy
Casualties/Deaths: 4,700
Significance/Information: Bull Run was the first major battle of the Civil War. Most people didn't even think there would be a war...they just thought the North would quickly march towards Richmond and end the rebellion. However, this was proven not true. The Confederates led by Beauregard and Johnston stopped the Union. This battle showed that the war wasn't going to be easy.
FORT DONELSON
Location: Tennessee
Winner: Union
Casualties/Deaths: 16,000
Significance/Information: General Grant on the Union side invaded Simon Buckner's army in Tennessee. This Union victory gained the United States control of the Cumberland River. The river didn't allow supplies to reach parts of the Confederacy. Grant's fame also went up.
GLORIETTA PASS
Location: New Mexico
Winner: Union
Casualties/Deaths: 369
Significance/Information: Often called the "Gettysburg of the West", this battle was the westernmost major battle of the war, during the New Mexico campaign. John Chivington led the Union. The outcome meant that The Union now firmly controlled the territories of New Mexico and Arizona.
SHILOH
Location: Southwestern Tennesse
Winner: Union
Casualties/Deaths: 23,000
Significance/Information: Although it wasn't looking good in the East, it was a blast for the Union in the west. Fearless general Grant gained control of Shiloh, after this bloody one-day battle. It is very important to know that this gave the Union control of the entire Mississippi river! Important Trade goods could no longer reach the South!
2nd BULL RUN
Location: V
Winner: Confederacy
Casualties/Deaths: 22,000
Significance/Information: The North was looking forward to the march on Richmond. Lee didn't let that happen. He gathered up his army and met General Pope of the Union there. After several failed attempts, Pope retreated and Lee won. The battle was at the same location as the First Bull Run! Stonewall Jackson of the South was a crucial role player in this battle.
ANTIETAM
Location: Western MarylandWinner: Union
Casualties/Deaths: 22,700
Significance/Information: Antietam (called Sharpsburg by the South) was the bloodiest one-day battle of the war. It was very ruthless and frowned upon by both sides after the war. Hooker, Burnside, and McClellan led the north. Lee led the south. It was about to be a draw, but the North pushed forward and Lee retreated. It is important to note that it also urged Abraham Lincoln to write the Emancipation proclamation.
