         The problem with                    Lousiana/New Orleans

Brought to you by MrBLOGGER

Introduction

You may have heard Louisiana and the greater New Orleans area in the news recently. But why is it in the news? And what does it have to do with climate change and the sea? Read this interesting article to find out about the modern problem with Louisiana.

Why is Lousiana/New Orleans prone to disaster?

When the French founded New Orleans in 1718, they were little aware of the geography of the area. They wanted to conquer the land in order to have a claim to the Mississippi River and the area around it. Although their plan worked, their choice of New Orleans made all of Louisiana settled, unaware of the climate or the area. They did not know about all the abundance of water, perhaps too much than they needed. More than 300 years later, and many civilizations later, you can see the effect of greater New Orleans and the Louisiana area

The French settlers

Hurricanes and floods are very common there. Why though? There are 5 reasons:

1. Hurricane Zone

Lousiana sits on a greater area that is commonly prone to Hurricanes, which in effect cause floods. This area includes much of the Gulf of Mexico. The reason is when the warm moist air over the gulf of Mexico begins to rise, heading towards land. Nowadays, the inhabitants know about this and scientists are trying to figure out some solutions.

2. Surrounded by water

As you can see, it isn't just the mighty Mississippi River and its tributaries that take over Lousiana; there are also other bodies of water. New Orleans is surrounded to the North by Lake Pontchartrain and to the east and south by the huge Gulf of Mexico. This causes a sensitive region of water in the area - anything could cause it to flood. The next section tells you what it has to do with elevation.

3. Elevation levels

You see, most of Lousiana, including the largest cities, has a very low elevation. The average elevation of the state is around 100 feet. But the southern parts of the state have an average elevation of 5 feet! Some parts even reach below sea level. When the elevation is low, during a flood, the water from nearby lakes can cause floods.

4. Climate Change - Water rising

Another big issue is Climate change or the changes in weather on Earth due to global warming. As you may know, the earth is heating up. The heating up causes the glaciers and ice at the poles to melt and bring up the ocean levels around the world. Areas like Louisiana are subjugated to this fate.

5. Damage

When the area gets hit, it causes damage. Sometimes, the damage can be great and fatal. But when floods and hurricanes hit the area often, it can make the ground and the building more unsafe. Fortunately, this can be easily prevented if it's on good care.

Those are the five main reasons why Lousiana and the greater New Orleans area experiences hard troubles regarding weather. I would like to take the time to wish them peace and safeness and hope for the best for them.

Look. Here is where I don't want confusion. I am NEVER cool with the idea of copying from outside sources. Therefore, this was not copied and was heavily paraphrased. I just got the IDEA from it.
