5 Random Why Questions

  1. ...doesn't America use the Metric System?

This is a question I get asked a lot. Almost every nation in the world uses the metric system...but why did America stick with the Imperial?

This is mostly because of the British. What happened was that when the British colonized the Colonies, they brought with them the British Imperial System of that time. Just as confusing as it is now, the Imperial System of then was a huge mess that was hard to understand. But the weird part is that now, most British use the Metric System, but Americans haven't adapted it for some reason.

And now...my mess of explanation..

If I say so myself...the Metric System would be so much easier. Everything ends in 10, and there's 100 cm in a meter. So if not 10, then 0, which is also quite convenient. Then we have the imperial system...which uses miles instead of kilometers, which means there's 5280 ft in a mile, and 0 degree celsius is 32 degrees fahrenheit. So it can be quite hard for a foreigner to understand the Imperial System.

I guess I have gotten used to the Imperial System. The weather makes some sense...and the logic behind it is that 0-32 degrees (in fahrenheit) is really cold, 33-60 degrees is moderate, and anything above 60 degrees is gonna get really really hot. And everything else in the Imperial System is a pain.

 2. ...do we yawn?

Ahh....yawning. Aka...randomly opening your mouth. But why? Why does your mouth take the action of opening itself in the first place? It all starts when you're either bored or tired. Looks like someone couldn't keep doing their chemistry project. Don't worry, me too.

Anyway, when this is the case, we just don't breathe as we normally do. When this happens, our bodies take in less oxygen because of the limit of movement. Yawning helps us bring more oxygen into our bodies (thus, why we open our mouths) into our blood and retract more carbon dioxide out of it.

Just because I like pain (and just in case you do too), here is more:

If your curiosity meter is bursting, then let me just warn you that yawning is perfectly normal. We don't have to worry about, because we have our brain. In this case, the hypothalamus. Research shows that neurotransmitters and neuropeptides increase yawning if its injected into the hypothalamus.

 3. ...is the sky blue?

You look up, and what do you see? The sky, and all of its blueness. But why is the sky blue? Out of every single color on this universe, why blue?

The thing is....sunlight of every rainbow color passes through the visible air. However, as this process happens, the blue part causes changed particles to oscillate (meaning swing or sway) faster than the red part.

Think of it like a marathon. All the rainbow colors are competing to be seen by the human naked eye. but there's only one that can win. When the end is nearing, the blue and red parts are in 1st and 2nd place. However, since the blue part can cause those changed particles faster than the red, blue is the winner/

 4. ...is the globe round?

So first we hear the world is flat.

If we still believed that theory today, then that means no one knows anything anymore. But why would people even believe that theory when they would have 100% seen images of the Earth on the internet? This is because while walking around, all the land seems flat. But I have to ask...do you think mountains or even oceans don't exist?

After that ridiculous theory, we have the theory the Earth is round.

And yes..that is correct. But if you still like pain, which I do, the actual shape of the Earth is an oblate spheroid. But similar to sphere.

But what happens if a person asks you why the Earth (this is the truth) is an oblate spheroid? If this happens, impress them with this information.

(Transforming to valley girl accent)

So like if we go back to like the 16 like hundreds, we will find that Sir Isaac like Newton made the proposition that like the Earth like flattens at the North and like South Poles because of like the rotational forces. As the Earth like spins on its like axis, the centrifugal like force causes the Earth to like bulge out at like the equator. Even though like the idea that the Earth is like round is technically like correct, a better model of like the Earth would be like an ellipsoid, which is like a sphere which is slightly like flattened at its like poles.

 5. ...are Americans banned from North Korea?

2 words. Memes and safety.

I'm not even lying, Americans consider North Korea a meme. Have you ever seen the internet? But what does this have to do with the Americans being banned from North Korea? I have no idea.

However, the safety is an actual problem in North Korea. Take my word for it, it's more dangerous than America. However, if I think about it, the Americans banned themselves from going to North Korea. This is due to the fact that you need to enter the country in guided tours which are only in either China or like South Korea. You aren't allowed to fly to North Korea from any foreign airport, which makes sense because almost no resident there has technology or wifi.

So it makes sense the Americans banned themselves from visiting North Korea..

You still haven’t explain why Americans are banned from North Korea…or how they supposedly banned themselves…or why North Korea is so dangerous.

Why change back then? I thought the reason they used it was because it was there from the start...

Alficonado: Re: the metric system the US was actually looking at a switch to the metric system 1794, and again in 1975, when the metric conversion act was passed. It was voluntary however and never became popular. There is some limited use here now. The newspaper industry switched over to metric because newsprint comes from both the US and Canada. Canned foods are labeled in ounces as well as grams listed in smaller letters. Soda that once sold in half gallon and quart containers, but is now in 1 liter and 2 liter bottles yet individual servings most commonly are still sold in 12 oz (355ml) cans. I learned both systems in elementary school, which I find handy to know when in another country.

I don’t think imperial is hard or weird. Metric to me is honestly confusing.

@Minecraft Man, for most people outside the US, they would feel the same way for metric.

Imperial might not be weird for us, but it's definitely weird for people outside it.
