1. The World's Population Can Fit Inside Texas
We've all heard everything's bigger in Texas, or just the US in general. But when we take the entire world's area into account, does Texas really seem that big?? Well, it should, because no matter how spread out the Earth's people are, all 8 billion people (that is an approximation) can fit into an area of 250,404 sq miles, basically the size as the same state of Texas.
There is one catch though. Every place in the world has to have the same population density (that is the amount of people in 1 sq mile). But still seems pretty amazing though, doesn't it?
2. New York City Has Over 200 Zip Codes
Let me break that down for you. New York City is so densely populated, that buildings (that's right, buildings) in the city have their own zip codes. For example, the Empire State Building's is: 10118. The Chrysler Building's is: 10174. But if I'm boring you with buildings that have zip codes, you may also be wondering why buildings in this city have zip codes. Is New York the only city with buildings with zip codes?
It all has a very long story that I'm gonna tell you about right now: I have no idea.
3. Boston And Austin Are The Only State Capitals That Rhyme
You can try Raleigh and Albany, but not really. Carson City & Salt Lake City? Get out of here.
However, since Boston is really pronounced "Bostin", that makes the cities of Boston and Austin the only capital cities in the US that rhyme.
4. All Cardinal Directions Lead To New York From Stamford, Connecticut
Let's just say you happen to be in Stamford, Connecticut. Similar to how many directions from Detroit lead to Canada, same goes with Stamford and New York. If you drive North, you'll reach New York, if you drive South, you'll reach New York again, if you drive East (even though you'll need an "amphibian vehicle") you'll reach New York again, and if you drive West, big surprise, same result.
5. It Is Possible To Walk From The United States To Russia In The Winter
So...picture this. Two islands. Insane, right?!
Okay, but more seriously, there are two islands called Big and Little Diomede. Big Diomede is the easternmost part of Russia, and Little Diomede is located off the coast of Western Alaska. These islands are only located about 2 miles from each other. Because of this, in winter, when the land freezes, it's literally possible to walk across the two islands from Alaska to Russia or Russia to Alaska.
That basically means you can walk from North America to Asia or vice versa.
South - Oyster Bay, New York (Approximately 30 minutes to the nearest part of New York City)
East - Southold, New York (Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to the nearest part of New York City)
West - Pound Ridge / North Castle / Rye, New York (Approximately 45 minutes to the nearest part of New York City)
In fact, New York City is inaccessible from Stamford using the cardinal directions, so I think you mean New York State instead of the city.
