Will Russia be Banned from Paris 2024?

Russia and Belarus are banned

Before I start, I do not support Russia or Belarus in the situation involving the invasion.  I am fully on Ukraine's side. Now to the olympic ban news. In a statement made on April 27, 2022, Russian sports minister Oleg Matystin has, "expressed hope the nation will not be banned from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with the nation largely blocked from international sport due to the invasion of Ukraine." accoding to InsidetheGames.biz . Also, InsidetheGame.biz says, Paris's mayor, Anne Hidalgo, has hinted at the possibility of her backing a ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing. So, it is up to Hidalgo and the president of France to decide. Ukrainian refugees have teamed up with Switzerland, and some Ukrainian athletes will compete with Switzerland. So there is hope for Ukraine to compete in Paris 2024. I'm FudgyOreo111, have a nice day.

The sanctions in sport won’t destabilize the Russian government quite a lot. They are going to destabilize the athletes that doesn’t have nothing to do with the war (and are even against it) that can lost their passion for the sport. Either moving Champions League’s finals from St. Petersburg to Paris, or banning Russia of participating of sport competitions, won’t change absolutely nothing.

It doesn't change anything with regard to the war I agree, however it does keep the situation in the minds of the public. It also prevents the Russian propaganda machine from using the games to gain public support.

I suppose there could be a "independant" athletic group. They could unite together and compete under a different title. Whether the Russian government would allow this is a different matter.

I agree with both of you. I am not sure how Hidalgo will respond. I personally think they should compete under the same ROC (Russian Olympic Committee) as they did in Tokyo. But once again, I think that the medals should be given under Russia, but ROC, since they already have a ban from the doping issue. Like MG17 said, the sanctions might destabilize the athletes that are against the war. BigGeographyGuy also made a point in the claim that, "it's Putin's war and not Russia's war since most of the Russian public is against the invasion." I actually agree that Russia should not be banned entirely. However, the sport of shooting has banned them, and they were banned from the 2022 paralympics. Lovely for me to say though, that Ukraine won the 2nd most medals, after China, with 11. Belarus kind of confuses me. Just because the president sided with Putin? They are likely to compete under their name and flag.

In my opinion, I think that Russia shouldn't be banned from sports as. like much of the world says, it's Putin's war and not Russia's war since most of the Russian public is against the invasion. But still, some countries don't see this and are in favour of excluding Russia from sports altogether as they think that all of the country is to blame for the war. Anyway, nice blog! :)

I don't support sports bans for political reasons. Besides, if you only ban Russia then it's kind of like spitting in the faces of people from other countries that have been plagued by war and invasion recently.

And yes, I know FIFA, the IOC, etc, are all European/Western organisations despite controlling international sports bodies, so they only care when the victims are also European or Western. Still, it feels pretty sad seeing such blatant form of inequality.

But who am I to speak, after all? I'm not from a relatively civilised, relatively European country ;)

I am against the ban on participation, although I am sure that our team will not be allowed to participate. Here are the reasons:

1. This will violate, though the main, but forgotten since 1976, the principle of "sport outside politics".

2. This is unjustified xenophobia against Russian athletes, as well as the suspension of Yugoslavs and South Africans at the time.

3. If the IOC cares about human destinies, and not the isolation of Russia (which is unlikely), then it would dismiss the United States and Israel for the war in Syria, Turkey for the war against the Kurds, NATO countries for the war in Libya and Afghanistan, etc.
