Script Tease

A COVE ON A NORTH CAROLINA LAKE

<Colin’s eyes slowly open and he blinks. Sunlight filters through the trees and he groans as he struggles to sit up>

<He is floating with his head on a pack above the water. He turns his head to view his surroundings>

<He is in a cove filled with blue water, trees, and a sandy beach with quartz rocks>

<Colin sits up in the water and looks at his soaked outfit. He shakes his arms and shades his eyes with his hand>

<He notices that there are bodies surrounding him in the water, all face-down and dead. Colin is startled and moves back in the water, accidentally splashing himself>

<He steadies himself and moves through the water towards the nearest body. The only sounds are the rustling of the trees in the small breeze>

<Colin reaches the dead body. It’s a soldier dressed in black fatigues, with a holster strapped around his waist. His skin is pale and clammy in death>

<Colin upturns the body and then lets it fall back in the water. He mumbles inaudibly to himself and turns around once more>

<He sees a smoking, steel and concrete drop ship, with small fires turning some of the twisted metal into scrap. It’s a pod about the size of a school bus; the airlock has been ripped away and the interior is showing. Water laps into the center>

<Colin walks into the drop ship. Food bags, first-aid kits, parachutes, and other boxes line the wall. Two seats in the cockpit are smashed in, as is the windshield glass. Six seats circling a thin steel column are still intact, but the seatbelts are torn off>

<Colin moves to the back and rifles through a storage room. A hole in the roof lets in sunlight and a chunk of the floor has been ripped off. A small fire erupts on the shelves, but Colin stamps it out with a wet piece of fabric>

<He continues to search>

COLIN: Come on, ground packs, where are you?

<He moves through bags of dirt and farming equipment>

COLIN (as he reads the labels and moves the bags to the side): Don’t need that

<He shoves more bags aside and then finally finds a collection of six backpacks. A hole is right next to the storage unit. Colin peers through it and finds two more bags sunk in the water>

<Two other packs are torn open, their contents spilt around the unit. Colin opens an intact one and rifles through it>

COLIN (as he searches the pack): Okay, food…check. Water…check. Compass…check. Knives…check

<His voice trails away as he finishes searching. He hoists the bag over his head and moves to the cockpit and sees smoking instruments and the destroyed center console>

<He finds the radio beacon shredded in half—wires are strewn all about>

COLIN: Shit

<With nothing left to do, Colin walks back through the drop ship and out into the water>

<Colin wades through the water again. He looks left to see open water—most likely a lake. He hears a bird chirping, the first sound of life he’s heard. He brightens for a second, but then catches sight of the floating bodies>

<He makes his way to one of the bodies and slips the gun from its holster. He checks the safety and then fires one round into the water, causing a small splash that reverberates around the cove>

<He straps on the gun and takes the soldier’s extra rounds and rations, slipping them into his pack>

COLIN (to the dead soldier): Sorry

<With the gun in one hand, Colin wades towards the beach. When he makes it, he watches his boots sink into the mud and takes a deep breath. After a moment of hesitation and a gust of wind, he moves towards the edge of the surrounding forest>

COLIN (in a voiceover as he walks): My name is Colin Phillips. I am a Space Explorer for Humanity. I was sent here to find out if Earth was survivable. From what I’ve seen so far, it is. It’s been over a thousand years since humanity first left Earth, and our Commander thought it was time to get humanity back home. With our new rocket-propulsion technology, the journey would take only two months. I came with seven other guys; none of us knew each other very well, but we were all excited to be the first of our people to come home. We thought ourselves pioneers. The bodies back there were the soldiers sent to accompany us; to help us start a colony from which humanity could grow and prosper. I volunteered for this mission, but they didn’t. They gave their lives, but never got to see what they gave their lives for…Currently, the radio beacon is broken, so there’s no sense in staying at the ship. Right now, I’m going to find the other guys I came with, if they’re still alive. We’ll be alone, though. We’ll have no idea who’s coming. If anyone comes at all.

Hope You Guys Enjoyed!
