Genuine advice I'd like to tell new quiz-makers

+15

Hey there, good to see you here! In this blog there won't be much yet again, I simply would like to address a few things on quiz-making. I've actually written one of those blogs before but it seems like that didn't really help. So without further ado...

Research

You can't make a good quiz without conducting any sort of research. Don't be lazy and just type some words in the Google search bar et voilà! Okay no, it's not a hard thing to do but that's just oversimplified. You see, you don't want to make a historical quiz and base your map off a random alternate history .png you find online. Grab a few sources and compare them, then use what information you think is reasonable.

Also remember that crediting is a thing

Spamming is a big no no

*sighs* I beg you, don't spam quizzes. I get it, everyone wants some sort of attention, but hear me out, spam-making quizzes paints a terrible picture of you. If the quality of your quizzes isn't any good, avoid making more than one quiz per day.

Aesthetics

Nothing to see here, just make sure you have a thumbnail that isn't flaming garbage, a description that is more than 5 words long, and have caveats when needed. Don't spam CSS and disgusting amounts of HTML. Also, the formatting of the hints and answer cells... Just don't make it ugly alright?

Other aspects to consider

- Add an SVG map when suitable (so don't add one if it's not going to be appealing or if it is ultra cramped)

- Don't take people's quizzes and make a crappier version of their creation (I won't be publicly shaming anyone here. If you do that, please stop, it's purely annoying)

- Don't be toxic if someone points out something about your content, do some research on whatever they've requested and respond to them properly, and update the quiz if needed. Even if they're purely nitpicking on something that isn't at all your problem, just keep the fires to yourself

- Make quizzes because you are passionate about it, don't make them for takes

- Remember to spell-check and grammar-check before you upload

- Check the type-ins and change them manually when needed. You would be disappointed if a quiz doesn't accept USA for the United States

- Don't use GT or any other service to translate your quizzes into countless other languages you know nothing about, no regular human knows 50 languages and can be such great at rather distant ones like say Mandarin Chinese and Amharic

- If you want to make a quiz that is a sequel to someone else's, it's always best to first contact them and ask for permission

- Try to work on improving your map-making skills since people tend to like quizzes with a good SVG map, they just make the whole quiz look loads better

- Make sure that the quiz you plan to make doesn't already exist

- Your title, description and caveats need to make sense. If they are not clear enough, that would be an issue

- Please don't spread propaganda, this site is meant to be family-friendly

- Low-effort and unoriginal content such as Fast Typing (insert letter) should be avoided, or be posted solely as private joke quizzes

- Lastly, be creative

P.S.
Many of those I've stated apply to blogs too

Thanks for reading till the end! Hope this blog helped new quiz-makers a bit and that we will be seeing less and less painfully low quality content. Have a nice day :D

Nice blog bread, hopefully this stops some of the problems with the current state of the R.U.Q

Hopefully it will, I trust that a good chunk of dedicated users would improve progressively

I can tell that it is possible since my content was somewhat spam back then

I know you've sorta outlined it, but PLEASE add a "No Fast Typing" rule

I see why you've mentioned that. It's utterly low-effort, unoriginal and has stirred up a lot of toxicity and drama in the past. I'll add that, thanks!

Sigh...you know what? I wish people would give honest opinions on quizzes. Everyone today is too afraid of feelings getting hurt. Because there's no way in the name of the Soviet Union that people actually like "How many times can you type POOP in 30 seconds".

I think many of the oldest users would give honest opinions and actual advice. If I were to comment on a quiz I don't like, I would definitely give genuine feedback since I would want to see less of those. One issue is that commenting those would be hard, since you must do it in an obvious not-so-hurtful way to avoid drama

Yeah, what I mean is that people stop posting "nice" on every quiz, and instead give real feedback.

SirPhilippines: Are you challenging me?

Anyways, good blog! I'm sure this will help new creators make the best quizzes they can make!

Thanks

I'd like to state that I'm not necessarily targeting any individual in this blog. It is completely okay to post several quizzes a day, given that the quality is passable.

Yeah, I have a specific day and time I like to release quizzes. Some weeks I make more than one and release all of them then.

Disagree on spamming quizzes. Spamming quizzes allow you to gain lots of takes without much effort, and put you into a higher and more greedy quiz rank. It also clogs up the recent quizzes page so that people can only see your quizzes. Finally, people who hate Fast-Typing Quizzes are just jealous.
