The changes in GDP per capita in North and South Korea over the past few decades tell the story of two countries that were very similar historically and are radically different today.

Among all South Asian countries, life expectancy has increased dramatically in the past 50 years, with especially impressive gains in Nepal and Bangladesh.

Contrary to popular belief, the most dramatic decreases in China's birth rate occurred in the 1970s, before the one-child policy was instituted. In recent years, as the policy was relaxed and eventually replaced, the birth rate has increased slightly, but is still below the replacement rate.

Polio was a major problem in the United States throughout most of the 20th century. After a particularly bad outbreak in the 1950s, vaccination brought numbers down significantly, and the disease was eradicated in the US in 1979.

In the past 40 years, polio cases have plummeted in developing countries. Currently, only two polio-endemic countries remain: Afghanistan and Pakistan.
