Everything Wrong with Yakko's World

In this blog I will be pointing out every mistake in Yakko's World by the Animaniacs. Yakko's world came out in 1993, so I will only be talking about the mistakes that were mistakes in 1993 (so I won't be talking about how South Sudan isn't mentioned or Czechoslovakia doesn't exist anymore, etc.) This song is supposed to name the countries of the world, so if a region that is not a country is mentioned, I will be talking about that. (I am not going to talk about Palestine or Taiwan) I will list the mistakes in order that they come in the song. Then I will list all the countries that were left out. (Note: I will give leeway with Yugoslavia because it fell right before the song was released, and it was probably composed before Yugoslavia broke up) Anyway let's get started!

In Yakko's World the Caribbean is listed as a country, which it in fact is not. The Caribbean is a sea, and is also sometimes referred to as a region, but it is not a country.

Contrary to popular belief, Greenland is not a country. Greenland is an overseas territory owned by Denmark. 

Puerto Rico is not a country, it is a territory of the United States of America, though it is not a state either. It is just owned by the USA.

Bermuda is not a country. Bermuda is an island in the Atlantic Ocean that is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom, yet it is listed in Yakko's World.

Tobago is not a country. Trinidad & Tobago is a country, however it did not say Trinidad & Tobago, it just say Tobago.

French Guiana is an overseas department of France on the Northeastern coast of South America, not a country.

Guam is not a country. It is an island territory of the United States of America in the Pacific Ocean. 

Asia is not a country. Asia is a continent consisting of 48 countries. It makes absolutely no sense as to why this is in the song.

Korea is a peninsula that has two countries on it: North Korea and South Korea. Korea itself is not a country though.

Tibet is not a country. Tibet is an autonomous region of the People's Republic of China

In the song, Yakko mentiona New Guinea as a country. New Guinea is not a country; it is an island shared by the countries of Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. Though when New Guinea is mentioned in the song on Papua New Guinea lights up so I think they probably only meant Papua New Guinea, but it is still a mistake

Borneo is an island in Southwest Asia shared by the three countries of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei

Algeria is a country, but Algiers, the capital, is not a country.

Dahomey was a country from 1600 to 1904, however it was not a country in 1993 when the Animaniacs released Yakko's World.

Another name for Mayotte, Mayotte is a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa.

The Cayman Islands (just Cayman in the song) is a Bristish overseas territory in the western side of the Caribbean Sea

Hong Kong is not a country. Right now it is a part of China, but at the time of Yakko's World's release, Hong Kong was a British Colony, so still not a country

Abu Dhabi is the capital city of the United Arab Emirates.

Crete is an island in Greece. It is not it's own separate country.

England is a country of the United Kingdom, but it is not it's own independent country, it is officially part of the United Kingdom.

Scotland is another country of United Kingdom yet it is not an independent country.

(Note: In the video the U.S.S.R. is still united on the map, but the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, two years before this song was released so I will still be naming the former Soviet Republics. They also said Russia instead of Soviet Union so it was dissolved when the song was written as well)
