Debate Field 3

+1

The United Kingdom is comprised of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Some say that each of those four are sovereign. Some say the opposite. Here is a place to argue about whether or not they are real sovereign countries. (Hint: They're not. The UK is the country.) Comment below to share your thoughts and arguments.

Anything can be called a country. What it boils down to, and what matters, is sovereign states.

That's right. Scotland, England, Wales, and Northern Ireland are countries that aren't sovereign. Some people on this site like to say they are, though they aren't.

I'm British myself. Scotland, NI and Wales all have their own "government" and First Minister. However, England's leader is the Prime Minister.

They are basically countries (England, Scotland, NI and Wales), within a larger country (United Kingdom).

This is a lot like how Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten and Netherlands are all countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

They are not sovereign, but they are still "countries".

I think they should be different countries because they have their own cultures and only government in London would be unfair

Idk. They can be countries. But sovereign they aren’t. I think that England, Wales, Scotland and NI are like states. But the sistem in UK is different that here in Brazil.

The UK is a kingdom, like the name says, so these “countries” can be like this. The only thing that I know, that they’re First-Level Subdivisions. What difficult... LOL

They have territory, government, capital, population, idiom, culture... so, they can be countries. If South America make an empire, Brazil can still a country, but subordinated to South America

OK OK, now I know. In my blog, I said the difference between Kingdom VS Empire. In the case of kingdom, England, Wales, Scotland and NI aren’t countries. Spain and Norway for example, are kingdoms. In the case of empire, they can be countries, but subordinated to the empire. I think that’s it.

I think that they shouldn't become separate because while there are differences, the empire is not multi-ethnic or multi-lingual

What are you talking about? A native Scotsman and a native English are very different.

same primary language, same ethnicity, culture is different, but you would end up with 100000 countries if you divided countries by culture.

I don’t want to enter in the discussion, but in this case, South America can be unified, and the Iberia too.

A Englishman who lived in China for 75 years will speak more Mandarin too. Language spoken by individuals doesn't really define countries. Language spoken as a group defines countries.

Exactly. Most of Wales speaks predominantly english, even though they are Welsh, if India can be one country with 22 languages, the UK can be one with 3

The reason why the UK is geographically controversial boils down to history. A reason why England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland joined together is because they were mainly Protestant as opposed to Catholic Ireland. Culturally, they are very different. I think politically and culturally they should be separate, but should be together geographically (maybe except for Northern Ireland) and religiously.

Why? Debates are places where people can show their interests. I don't think JetPunk should be a place where people know nothing about each other. IMO points and opinions are meant to be shared.

Exactly. I make these debate blogs as a place for people to share their thoughts and opinions on stuff like this.
