In this post, we will see a little about the Geography of Brazil, a country that I am proud to live in! Leave more information or your suggestions for next posts in the comments!
Also based on Wikipedia.
Brazil is a country located in the east of South America. Currently, it has an area of about 8,516,000 km², and its population already exceeds the mark of 210 million inhabitants. It borders 9 countries, of which: Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, Venezuela and French Guiana (French overseas department). The highest point is Pico da Neblina, with an altitude of 3000 meters.
Its climate is tropical, and relatively temperate in the region below the Tropic of Capricorn. Its vegetation is mainly composed of forests and some fields and savannahs. The most imposing of them is the Amazon Rainforest. It also houses the second largest river in the world in length, and the largest in depth: the Amazon River. Also, there is the Pantanal, which holds the title of the world's largest wetland.
It is wrong to think that the entire time zone in Brazil is GMT-3. Brazil has not only 1, but 4 time zones: GMT-2, GMT-3, GMT-4 and GMT-5.
Brazil also has islands and atolls! The Abrolhos Archipelago, the Rocas Atoll, Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelao, Trindade and Martin Vaz, and the most famous of them: the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago.
Brazil has very extensive limits. There are 7,367km (4,578 miles) of coastline, and 15,719km (9,767 mi) of border with other countries and territories.
Brazil has many ups and downs (literally). Its northern region has plains and depressions. Down the territory, we find mountains and plateaus.
It also has several rivers in addition to the Amazon. São Francisco, which is the largest river with territory completely within Brazil, Paraná, which is the largest tributary of the Río de la Plata, etc.
Despite having a predominantly tropical climate, depending on the region the climate changes a lot. Further south, winters are dry and summers are rainy. The opposite occurs in the northern parts.
Brazil has 5 regions: North, Northeast, Center-West, Southeast and South. In addition, it is composed of 26 states + the Federal District, where the capital Brasília is. There are 5570 municipalities. These are divided into districts, of which more than 10,400. For purely statistical purposes, the municipalities were grouped in 1990 into 558 micro-regions, which in turn constituted 137 mesoregions. São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Salvador, Fortaleza, Belo Horizonte, Manaus, Curitiba, Recife and Goiânia are the 10 largest Brazilian cities.
Brazil also has many other peculiarities. In winters, the South Region, and the high mountains (mainly in the Southeast) receive frosts, and in some cases, even snow! Anyone who has ever thought that having savannah in Brazil is something incredible, will also marvel at this: Brazil has its "mini-deserts"! The Genipabu Dunes, the Jalapão State Park, and the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park look like Sahara. Space program? There are also in Brazil! The AEB (Brazilian Space Agency) sends rockets at two bases, located in the Northeast Region.
Like every country, Brazil has its environmental problems. The biggest are: deforestation in the Amazon and the Atlantic Forest; frequent wildfires; the advance of urbanization; pollution, etc.
