Christmas is undoubtedly for Christians, the most important holiday of the year. Many countries celebrate the date, and Brazil is no exception. Being a mostly Christian country, the festivity that date back to the birth of Jesus are seen in almost every house, whether with many adornments, or not.
Today, December 25th, we are going to see how Brazilians celebrate the Christmas, this important holiday in the life of the Christians of the world.

On the 24th of December at night we serve Christmas dinner, which cannot be missing turkey, chester, french toast, the panettone and codfish balls (Portuguese heritage). Creativity also has a place at Christmas dinner, and it is customary to prepare desserts, such as pies and cakes. The turkey and the chester are almost indispensable, but there is plenty of room for a beautiful lamb, a loin, or a shank. These in turn, are mainly accompanied by potatoes, rice, beans and farofa.
The customs of Christmas are many. One of them is to gather the family for a big lunch the next day with what was left of the previous night and adding a few more things. Everything is a reason for the family reunion and the children to show all the toys they got from Santa Claus.
At dawn on the 24th to the 25th, the children wait for Santa Claus, who, in their imagination, arrives in a sleigh with nine reindeers and a big red bag with many gifts. For them he is responsible for distributing Christmas gifts to all the children in the world, especially those who have behaved well throughout the year. Many children write letters to Santa.
It is a tradition that the mail delivery service in Brazil chooses some letters from needy children and personally delivers the gift to the child who wrote the letter. Another tradition is that at Christmas time, several companies gather in a restaurant, bar, event hall to exchange gifts and play with a secret friend. This also happens among friends and family.
For trade it is the time that sells the most and when Brazilians are most indebted. In many cases there is an exaggeration in purchases. Malls and shopping centers are always full and some streets are closed to car traffic to make shopping easier. The commerce always makes campaigns with drawings of cars, motorcycles, basic baskets and money. It is also common to reward the best decorated store and the most decorated city house at Christmas, this is clear in some cities only.
Another very common thing in Brazil is to set up Christmas trees and Nativity scenes of various sizes and models, in churches, parks and houses. It is also time to visit shelters for the elderly, nurseries, orphanages and hostels to take food, toys or just give a hug to tose who do not have family members around. At Christmas people are more sensitive to volunteer work.
The tradition of Christmas carols is also common in Brazil. They aim mainly with the Christian focus and emphasize the Baby Jesus. Here are some common carols and some of their excerpts (in Portuguese).

Just one question.....what is "chester" ? The only chester I know is as a name or the city about 25 miles from me!
Well, Chester is... difficult to explain. But it’s like every chester is chicken, but not every chicken is chester.
In fact, the chester is a registered trademark, not a species. The bird originates from a chicken line that was brought from Scotland to Brazil in 1980. A few years later, it started to be marketed in the country as a competitor for Sadia's Christmas turkey - today, Sadia and Perdigão belong to BRF.
The difference between chester and turkey, is because the chester is a bird with a lighter color and has a higher concentration of meat in the chest and thighs, 70% of its meat concentrated in these pieces of the animal. Turkey differs from chester in that it is a slightly darker meat, with a more pronounced flavor.
Hope you understand! Lol!
By the way, What is farofa ?
Farofa is cassava flour or blanched or toasted corn flour, usually passed through fat or butter, to which numerous other ingredients can be added, such as: roasted bacon, fried sausage, egg, meat, tofu, or other foods. vegetable origin.
P. S. Now that you are probably online, I want to do a question. I was doing a quiz when posted this comment. I want to do the state quizzes translated in Portuguese. Do you think that is a good idea? I want to ask Quizmaster, but I don’t have his email, the only email that I have is my school email, and he isn’t occupied for answer me in the proper JetPunk.
In regard to the quizzes , I would say go for it, any quiz you make will gat at least some takers, they all add up!. I'm nearing the end of my "On This Day" series of quizzes and most of them only have around 5 or 6 takes, but times that by 365 and my position on the list of users has gone up quite a bit .
I asked Quizmaster a question earlier in the year via e-mail on the Contact Us section and he replied within a couple of days, I should imagine he is pretty busy with his other websites too but be patient and 'm sure he'll get back to you.
The city of Chester is the county town of Cheshire and has been a city since Roman times, check out the wikipedia page HERE
And I know, but as I say, mine email is of school, and I can’t send an email to QM. I need to find a way to talk to him. But thanks to answer my questions! And what about the Chester nut?
