JetPunk Asks: What do You Want for Christmas?

+23

Sometimes the Quizmaster needs to buy presents for people.  But buying presents is hard.  So I'm asking for your help.  What do you want for Christmas?  Go into the comments to give me some ideas for gifts that make people smile and, while you're at it, gifts that make people frown.

As suggestions are added, I'll update my list below.

Good Gifts

Suggested by the Quizmaster
  • These long handle shoe horns. I've converted my whole family to the shoehorn lifestyle!
  • One ounce silver coins. In 25 years, your money will be nearly worthless. But silver coins will always hold their value.
  • Framed art, especially if you make it yourself or know the artist.
  • A small jar of fancy honey. It lasts a long time and it tastes delicious.
  • An Instapot.
Cathlete
  • Maybe a good Christmas present would be a JetPunk premium membership.
McKenzieFam
  • A hoverboard or a Rip-Stick. Disclaimer: Hoverboards don't actually hover.
  • Hedge trimmers (for some reason grownups are always wanting those)
  • Tickets to some upcoming concert, sports event, or art exhibition, depending on who you're buying this for
  • Hairpins, hairclips, hairties, hairbrushes, etc. (for little girls)
  • A new piece of kitchen equipment (e.g. a knife block, a frypan, a stick blender)
  • Knitting needles, a wool skein, a pattern book (for the knitting grandma)
  • Seedlings, new gloves, garden trowel, mini sprinkler ( for the gardners)
  • Notebooks, pens, protractor rulers, (for those sort of people)
  • Hot Wheels/Matchbox anything (for little boys)
  • A new Xbox controller, Oculus goggles (for older boys)
  • Anything sparkly and pink (for little girls)
  • Airbuds (for teenagers)
  • A set of socket wrenches, a set of drill bits, a new hammer, a level, a c-clamp, new Allen keys, a full set of screwdrivers (for the tool collector)
  • String of fairy lights, fake plant ornaments, candles, small picture frames (for the home decorator)
  • Lots more, see comments

  • Why not give them books? Books are the best presents that I received.
  • $BTC
CringeDragon
  • Concert tickets will always be my favorite gift, especially when I get more than one for a band a friend and I both like. Seeing live music is one of the most fun experiences you can have.

  • Lego!

  • I use a website called lendwithcare where you can give microloans to entrepreneurs in developing countries and help them start or grow their business - then it gets repaid so you can keep doing it. Would 100% recommend.

  • Polaroid camera
  • Vintage globe
  • Pull-up bar
  • LED light strips
  • Hair straighteners.
  • Bucket list movie poster where you scratch off each movie when you see it
JWatson24 MrCharter
  • Scooters, bikes, things that have wheels.

  • I highly suggest drawnames.com. You just select and age range, a price range, and they offer you gift ideas from all different websites and gift ideas you probably wouldn't think of. Our family did it for the first time this year and everyone liked it. Give it a try its kinda fun.

  • In all seriousness though, a Nintendo Switch is a wonderful Christmas gift for youngsters.
QuantumMechanist
  • There's a rare breed of people who like circus peanuts. And when they like them, they really like them. Same gift every year, they'll love it.
  • If somebody does a lot of work, powertools are always a good option. Ask them what ones they want (there's always at least one).
  • Get yourself a 3d printer and learn how to use CAD programs. You can produce gifts for your friends and family for mere cents for the rest of your life. There are pretty good resin printers that are only $200 (at least in the US).
Potatoe1187
  • As a high schooler, I would say a nice mouse or headphones
  • Maybe even some LED lights to go behind someone's monitors or walls
  • Some high-quality brands of markers (Copic is a good brand) or colored pencils (Prisma is a good brand but pretty expensive)
  • Myself, I would actually really like a large map to put on one of the walls in my room
Baxtergrad Gllombfek
  • Swiss Army Knife
  • Ordnance Survey Map of the area

Gifts to Avoid

Suggested by the Quizmaster
  • Candy bar gift baskets. Foreign users may find this hard to believe, but candy bar gift baskets are a real thing in America. They are like floral arrangements, but instead of flowers you get junk food. Just don't do it!
  • Trail mix. It has a ton of calories. It tastes okay I guess. If you give it to me, I will eat it all and then feel a slight sense of resentment that you made me do it.
  • Unhealthy food in general. You wouldn't give cigarettes to a smoker. You wouldn't give rum to an alcoholic. So why give junk food to the people you love? That said, if you do give candy, go for things that are extremely small and expensive. Leave them wanting more.
  • Unframed art. Getting artwork framed is inconvenient and expensive.
McKenzieFam
  • Another crazy Christmas sweater from Aunt Edith..
MG17
  • Socks
toowise
  • And why do my children (now grown up at 23 and 27) always buy me jelly beans. Dont get me wrong, I love jelly beans, but with a big jar I eat and eat and eat them, and then feel sick, but then eat some more the next day. I can't resist jelly beans.

Everything I suggest for our amazing Quizmaster, is anything you and your family or friend prefer. A gift needs to be generous and altruistic. Obviously you won’t give KFC turkeys for Christmas (oh, me confusing Thanksgiving again. It’s hard when you don’t celebrate Thanksgiving lol), but you don’t need to give one of Elon Musk spaceships lol. I’m sure they’ll be happy if you give with the heart (no, I don’t mean do a surgery for remove your heart and wrap up on a box lol)

I may be writing whining here (and I’m 99% sure is what I’m doing), and this blog is clearly satirical, but this is also a message to the community. Have everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Doesn't surprise me that QM thinks investing in shiny metals is a good idea. Pretty much a requirement in certain circles.

Dec 4, 2021
Seems to be almost an article of religious faith amongst those types who believe that government is worth nothing and only causes problems for everyone that cash has no value and yet shiny rocks will only ever go up in value because, y'know, everybody needs shiny rocks.

Please don't give me silver coins as a present. In addition to being worthless, practically (the last time I tried to insert one into the slot in front of my computer to pay for a purchase from Amazon it just broke my DVD-ROM drive), the myth that they are an air-tight surefire investment, just like real estate, or Bitcoin, is, in fact, a myth. If you had bought silver at its peak value back in 1980, for example, then tried to sell it in the early 2000s, you'd have lost 95% of what you paid. (less if you don't adjust for inflation, but still a lot) And if you adjust for inflation prices still haven't returned to where they were in 1980.

As KingEureka says, books are always a surefire gift if you're unsure of anything else. One particular suggestion I have is Atlas Obscura for anyone who's interested in travel/geography/history (so basically the kinds of people who like JetPunk). If the people you are getting gifts for aren't like that, the same people published a foodie book called Gastro Obscura, which I'm thinking of giving my sister this year.

Beyond that, lava lamps and plasma balls are awesome. I had a lava lamp as a kid and I absolutely loved it!

More seriously, I agree with some of the comments above, talking about books. And more specifically, I love to receive or offer for Christmas these beautiful thematic books with tons a informations about a specific subject and many beautiful unique pictures. I remember receiving one about Ghibli studios, an other about Roal Dahl and finally one about Kirby last Christmas, and I was very pleased. I hope Santa will bruing me one about Scrogge McDuck, Tolkien or James Bond this year.

For Christmas I want to make homeless, hungry, thirsty, cold, and sick people happy. . "Why not money? Why not peace? Why not something for yourself?" Or even "What's your reasoning?", you may ask. The reasoning is because when I do that stuff, it usually not only makes the person/people happy, it makes me happy and it fills my heart with joy. So actually, it actually is something for myself, but also something for other people. World peace is impossible, (at least in my mind, sorry John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo [Starr]!) and it would take the whole world to stop that. Money gives my desire and wants, not only my needs, and needs, wants, and desire is not happiness. Money CAN give happiness, but also there is other things to bring happiness. Another thing I would like is no more COVID-19, for that fact, no more diseases, but it depends on what the world thinks and does.
