JetPunk 2021 - Year in Review

+47

Overview

As we wave goodbye to 2021, we look to reflect on how the year has gone over here on JetPunk. With the coronavirus still running rampant worldwide, JetPunk continued to thrive with new users and quizzes. On top of this, new features were also abundant, as nearly every corner of the site was modified this year in one way or another. Whether that's the complete overhaul of our blogs, or the addition of dark mode, I'm sure something was added which tickled everbody's tastebuds.

In each of the sections below, we detail the various changes on JetPunk over the year, including highlights from some of the biggest quizzes created this year, users who joined us this year and also the most popular blogs of the year. At the end, we look at the traffic in 2021, and what we might look forward to in 2022.

New Features

Across 2021, so much has changed. With an overhauled blogs section, an updated quiz editor and many new toys for users to play with, I don't see how I can reduce them down to just 3 points like last year. Instead, I will have to expand to 4! A real testatment to the expansion seen on JetPunk in 2021.

  • Friend & Groups

The first update, which arrived all the way back in January, was the ability to add Friends on JetPunk. Later, the option to create Groups was also added. This functionality allows you to see recent quizzes and blogs from your friends, as well as how they did in quizzes. This can be found by going to any quiz, and clicking "friends stats" in the "more quiz info" box. E.g. Countries of the World Quiz - Friend Stats. With Groups, you can go further and create a private area where you can share quizzes, discuss them and also see how each other did on them. Great for creating challenges and competitions amongst friends!

  • The Blog Update

The BIG update of the year, with months of work pumped into it, was the complete overhaul and rennovation of the Blogs section on JetPunk. From a brand new Blog Editor, to the introduction of blog series, blog likes and your personal blog feed.

Simply, there is too much in this update to summarise in a short paragraph; that simply would not do it justice. The only way to truly understand how big this was is to read The Blog Update blog itself, as that outlines in thorough detail every change that was made.

The biggest change was the introduction of the "drag & drop" style Blog Editor, with its intuitive interface and flexibility, you can quickly conjure up a good-looking blog without advanced knowledge of HTML. In fact, much of this blog was written using the new components provided. Over time, more components may be added which can provide even greater flexibility to bloggers.

  • User Charts

Just a few months after the overhaul of user blogs, Quizmaster surprised the community with the addition of a brand new user-created content. This allows users to create their own charts, with choice of colours, units, axes and more. Whilst these are not as popular as blogs or quizzes, they have found a home on their own Recent User Charts page. Also, they have grown in usage since the ability to add them to blogs was introduced. So now, you can spruce up your blog by adding a chart to it. (An example of this is shown towards the end of this blog!)

  • The Create Update

And finally, we come to the biggest update to quizzes this year. With so many tweaks and changes, there's too many to cover individually. Thankfully we have a blog to summarise most of them: The Create Update. Some of the bigger changes were a graphical overhaul of the Quiz Editor, using inspiration from the Blog Editor, randomized Picture and Tile quizzes, a new "auto merge" option in text quizzes and new buttons across the site. Over the year various little changes have also happened to the quiz editor, such as the ability to create quizzes in Chinese, Russian and Bulgarian, adding images to Tile and Multiple Choice quizzes, scheduling a quiz to be in a series and so much more.

Despite these major changes, there were many smaller changes that didn't make the cut in this end-of-year review, such as User Spotlight, Dark Mode and more! Thankfully, they're all documented on JetPunk's Change Log for you to enjoy.

Top Quizzes

In 2021, it is fair to say that random quizzes, and map quizzes, once again dominated the scene. A special mention must go to overtired who managed to obtain 6 of the top 20 most popular new quizzes this year. Many of these used some revolutionary new CSS techniques on JetPunk that were unseen before. And so, to ensure variety and fairness, we once again will limit the following top 5 to a maximum of 1 per user (they are still all in the overall top 10).

Find The Mystery Country Using Color Clues - Randomized!

by Pandora49

Date Released: April 6thTotal Takes: 269,401Rating: 4.95
By far the breakaway success of the year, this quiz (and it's non-randomized counterparts) seemed to defy all previous trends to become a phenomenon overnight! It currently averages over 1000 takes per day, on its very first day it managed a whopping 886 takes, and it achieved over 26,000 takes on the front page on September 22nd. Not quite a record, but huge nonetheless.

Click a Valid Country A-Z

by BolyaiAnna

Date Released: February 21stTotal Takes: 64,171Rating: 4.98
Just one minute. Just 24 answers. And a world map. What can you achieve? Well for Anna, she managed to achieve a very good result with a rating of 4.98, and over 60k takes in one year, this quiz is a worthy one. It may be surprising it didn't exist until now, since the concept is one which resonates so familiarly to JetPunkers.

Guess the Countries Being Drawn

by overtired

Date Released: June 14thTotal Takes: 54,898Rating: 5.00
Now, overtired's biggest quiz of the year may not be the top spot, it easily deserves it. With a standout 5.00 rating, and achieving 3rd position with just 6 months instead of 12, overtired's complex use of SVG rendering, and CSS animations allows his quiz to become one for JetPunk's Hall of Fame. After almost 3 years on JetPunk, he seems to have struck gold this year, where his top 6 quizzes were all created in the last 7 months! It is exciting what he has in store for us next.

Random Category Elimination - Countries

by Stewart

Date Released: May 3rdTotal Takes: 47,235Rating: 4.99
It seems once again I have managed to find myself on this list. Whilst not making first place (thankfully), this quiz has become a quiz favourite of many Category Elimination fans, especially since it had been highly requested since the series began in 2019. I summarized the high effort it took to create this quiz, including having to code some additional parts on JetPunk's backend to get the functionality to work, in my blog: How I Made Random Category Elimination

Find The Mystery City Using Color Clues - Randomized

by Simon1006

Date Released: April 6thTotal Takes: 42,694Rating: 4.45
To round out the top 5, we have the successful counterpart to Pandora's country quiz in number 1. You may ask why Simon has the City one, and Pandora has the country one. Well, in fact the whole randomized idea for "Find the Mystery..." came from Pandora, but without Simon and myself, it would never have been possible. Simon devised the random groupings and how to functionally do it on JetPunk, while I figured the CSS to make the visual aspect work. Needless to say, Simon fully deserved to have credit for at least one of the Random Mystery quizzes, and it is rewarding to know the effort paid off!

So far over 60,000 quizzes have been released on JetPunk in 2021, these have amounted to over 7.2 million takes! This represents over 1.5% of all takes on JetPunk ever, or more helpfully about 9% of all takes this year! Given the age of JetPunk, and how many of the takes come from old classics like Countries of the World, it is very impressive to see that 1 year's worth of quizzes can make such a difference.

Top New Quiztakers

This year, we decided to change up this section. Instead of highlighting the biggest new creators, we thought instead we'd highlight the top new users with the highest level! The following 3 users managed to gain 78 levels in just 2021. A truly remarkable achievement, and we hope they enjoyed their first year of JetPunk!

79

TomTom1611

Date Joined: January 6thTotal Points: 24,470
In just 1 year, Tom managed to reach the top 0.2% of all JetPunk users. This is a truly incredible feat, and it cannot be understated! Tom has managed to achieve level 10 in all featured languages, whilst also specialising in French and English. In fact, looking into his stats, Tom has played over 7,100 JetPunk quizzes with a total playtime of over 200 hours!
78

Everard

Date Joined: January 7thTotal Points: 23,582
Unlike Tom, Everard has not ventured into all languages. However, they have managed to excel in Spanish and Italian, among others. Looking at their stats, Everard has played over 6,900 quizzes with a total playtime of over 350 hours!
78

ChumNastys

Date Joined: January 6thTotal Points: 23,359
Finally, we come to ChumNastys (who gets my vote for the best name of the 3). They have not ventured beyond the English section of JetPunk, achieving a level of 79 in English alone. Combined with a total playtime of over 230 hours and 6,100 quizzes played, it seems Chum is frequently mastering quizzes on the first try, or at least enough for 5 points!

As we progress, more and more quizzes are featured and so it becomes technically easier to achieve a high level. That said, to dedicate a whole hour of actual playtime to JetPunk on average per day (as Everard has done) is a truly incredible feat. All 3 thoroughly deserve their place here, however we can't ignore the many more who would have been close to featuring on this list.

Top Blogs

This year, after the introduction of liking blogs through The Blog Update, I thought it would be suitable to showcase the most liked blogs on JetPunk that were released this year. There is great variety here, and perhaps your next blog to read could be found here!

The Blog Update

by Stewart

Date Released: April 5thTotal Likes: 58Total Views: 995
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the most liked blog of the year was the one that accompanied one of the biggest updates of the year, and the update that was most requested by bloggers. This blog was a breath of fresh air to so many bloggers who struggled with HTML, and who wanted more from their blog section on JetPunk.

How We Can Improve Recent User Blogs

by Fuse

Date Released: September 22ndTotal Likes: 49Total Views: 664
Several months after the release of The Blog Update, it was only a matter of time until a blog like this was required. Fuse did an excellent job of clearly outlining and demonstrating what a "good" blog and a "bad" blog looks like, and encouraging a whole community to improve itself. In fact, this blog was so well received that we have now included it in Step 1 of the blog editor as a guide to new users, to encourage them to write good blogs that the community can positively engage with.

What if the Planets had their Own Flags?

by Aficionado

Date Released: October 6thTotal Likes: 32Total Views: 1,407
Being only the second ever blog to be featured (not by Quizmaster or me), this blog surely deserves the accolade of 3rd best. Such creativity and joy came from this blog, with sprinkles of comedy, plenty of information and colourful pictures throughout. What's not to like? My personal favourite is the flag of the Solar System, but I highly recommend reading this blog from start to finish.

Interview of a JetPunker #18 - overtired

by baptistegorce

Date Released: November 21stTotal Likes: 31Total Views: 265
The latest entry in this epic series of interviews, this one shot to fame as an instant classic, mostly because its interviewee - overtired - is such a charismatic, interesting and talented individual! After months of unbelievably impressive quizzes from the fellow, it was about time we discovered the person behind them. Despite substantially lower overall views, it shows that a high proportion of readers deemed this blog worthy of a like. These interviews keep getting better and I look forward to seeing who might be next!

There were far more than these 4 though, over 1000 blogs were submitted this year, with 20,000 comments combined across all of them and over 5000 likes. This shows that the users of JetPunk are beginning to engage with blogs thoroughly, and I look forward to seeing what you all can come up with next year!

Traffic in 2021

Looking back at the varied geographical sources of JetPunk's user base from 2020, we see that the proportions from each country varied greatly. However, looking at 2021's data and we don't see these great fluctuations. It seems JetPunk was less affected by the geographical events of 2021.

One thing we can look at though, is the fluctuations over the year of quizzes created and number of users that joined JetPunk.

Analysing this, we see that the number of users that joined JetPunk doesn't correlate to the number of quizzes released. However, there was a massive influx of new users at the start of May and towards the end of June and early July. This corresponds to a massive influx of French users that arrived on the website after two JetPunk videos went viral on TikTok.

Looking at 2021 as a whole, we stayed pretty much level with the end of 2020. No major fluctuations in traffic over this time period.

Looking to 2022

Last year, we predicted that JetPunk may return to "business-as-usual", this was not strictly the case, since we did not see the increase in May and decrease over summer that is typical, but rather we saw a rather stagnant number of users using JetPunk. However, we did see fluctuations in takes, but still nowhere near the growth of 2020 or 2019.

Some users predicted some things correctly, in particular MG17 who thought the interface would change (it did, for blogs and quiz editing at least), and that blogs will develop with their own search. However, we did not add a new type of quiz as he predicted.

What stood out in 2021 to you on JetPunk? What future developments would you like to see in 2022 and beyond? What do you plan to do to improve JetPunk yourself?

All data on this page is correct as of December 15th, 2021. Data from JetPunk and Google Analytics.

Excellent blog, Stewart! It's each year the blog I'm waiting for, and I'm never disapointed. Congrats!

Also, thank for the mention although this achievement is probably more due to overtired than me. But it's always satisfacting to be rewarded for what we do, especially on JetPunk.

Oh, and before I forget it, excellentes fêtes à tous!

YAYYY!!!! Amazing blog! I love Jeppy with his hat :D

I'm so glad I decided to get back into JetPunk this year, blogging and the community in general have been very fun this year, and I'm sure the next year will be great. I can't wait to see what innovations will come next. Congratulations to everybody featured here. Even though I'm not, if I added something to this community then that's good enough, and I'll keep trying to contribute next year :D

Thank you to every JetPunker for doing what they do in this community, especially to QM and Stewart for letting everything happen, and all the bloggers who make the RUB a fun place.

i didn't know you can see the views of a blog, how many views do mine get

Possibly because he has the data from Google Analytics. Sadly they aren’t shareable with the users. But I wanna see mine ones also lol

The perfect blog to review the perfect year on JetPunk. The world was still riddled with COVID, but that only made JetPunk more important!

I love to see this blog every year, because I like stats and seeing things reviewed. I feel really happy to see that this year, as I appear with a blog which is now used as a guide. I am eternally grateful for this - and also for the 664 views on that blog.

Thank you for your hard work this year, Stewart and Quizmaster! May we have a brighter 2022 in the world.

And a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all in this festive season!

I feel like every year that pass, we are improving more and more. The quizzes, the blogs (#AficionadoRules!) are always getting intensely outstanding (officially requesting a mention to the Blog Games!). And all the updates QM and Stewart are doing, are proof of this. What can I say about 2022... voice command!? Blog Takeover!? New mini-games (although Abby’s new blog can be already our new mini-game lol)!? All the types of graphics and charts!? Almost no HTML for write our blogs!? Will we have avatars!? That’s why we everyday (in my case every second lol) type the name of the Green Fish Trivia Quiz Website. Jetp... JetPunk claims every year the title of the best Quiz Site. We don’t need 1,000 characters for say how we, 30,000 users are grateful for you and Quizmaster.

Avatars/profiles would be cool, but it would be hard to keep it as a side feature without completely changing the vibe of JetPunk. I still hope it can be incorporated in some way, maybe just a few more features for profiles would be great.

Agree with those above, HUGE thanks to Stewart and Quizmaster for a great 2021 on JetPunk!

This blog really puts into perspective the number of amazing updates this year. We can so quickly get used to great new features that it's sometimes easy to forget they didn't exist only a few months ago... and as Stewart says there are many more not even mentioned here. For one, his implementation of the ability to make pre and post quiz states was huge for me... a lot of my quizzes this year wouldn't really work without it. So thanks again!

And congrats and thanks to all who have made so many fun, interesting, creative and diverse quizzes this year! I look forward to many more in 2022...

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year :)

Very nice blog Stewart! Interesting as always!

My apologies, but I couldn't help but just highlighting 2 mistakes I noticed. Firstly, I think the years mentioned at the end of the overview should be 2021 and 2022, not 2020 and 2021. And also when speaking about Pandora's idea in Simon's section, you had "full" instead of "find".

But aside from those few nitpicks, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this blog again, and I can't wait for next year!

I could do, but then blogs with repeat views would be inherently disadvantaged. The problem is it's not like takes where you have a defining metric of when a person interacting should count. For blogs someone could visit the page to check the comments and not the blog and it would count. There's no "good" way around it.

Hold on, can you change or modify the JetPunk web code to make your quizzes work? I guess that is one of the perks of being a moderator. Ya know, you or the QM should do a blog on the powers of a moderator, it'd be intersting and we (the blogging community) would love to know

It's probably best for security reasons not to go into details of the code. But yes, sometimes we have coded something new to make a quiz type possible. For example I added custom code to make Random Category Elimination possible. We only do it when we know it is worth the effort, and it won't break anything else.
