JetPunk Daily Word Search

+38

Today, we released a brand new minigame:Β JetPunk Daily Word Search

Every Day, Something Different

This new minigame brings a unique feature compared to other JetPunk minigames. Looking at Taxman and U.S. State Puzzle, where they are the same every time you play, and where Geography Snap and Even Split generate a random game every time you play. Well, we wanted something a bit different.

Introducing JetPunk Daily Word Search! (Or JPDWS for you acronymers). This brings about a new way to play JetPunk Minigames, no longer do you have a random game, but instead every single day there is a new puzzle, hand-crafted by myself, that is the same for everybody! You can easily use it to compare against others and brag about how good you are at them.

Once Upon a Theme...

However, the fun doesn't stop there. After all, just a word search day-in day-out every day might get tiresome. So, we're already switching it up a gear!

Every day of the week has its own "theme", whether that's Countries Tuesday or Cryptic Sunday, there's plenty to look forward. You can start the week off with an "easy" grid every Easy Monday, and you end the week on Fresh Friday with a unique theme, always something different to look forward to!

At Your Own Pace

We chose not to include any form of timing mechanism in these word searches. Why? Because that would ruin the fun! After all, some people want the challenge of finding all the words, not just however many they can find in 3 minutes.

To help with this, your scores and current words found are saved, even if you leave the tab and come back! Even more, if you're logged in to JetPunk, you can take a break from one device and pick up exactly where you left off on another!

The catch? You have to do it before the word search resets at Midnight EST, same time the Front Page resets.

Once It's Gone, It's Gone

Finally, we get to the sad part. Once a day has passed, the word search for that day is gone. Never to be seen or played again. So don't miss out! If you miss a single day, you may never know what that word search was. Plus, it only takes a few minutes, and it's good brain training!

Overall, we hope you enjoy your new minigame, and don't forget to share your scores each day, especially each Saturday, where there is a secret challenge that awaits everybody. But you'll find out what that is in good time.

Just an idea for expanding JetPunk, do you think it would be realistic/even possible to host some kinds of "competitions" to see who can complete minigames the fastest, and maybe give the winner(s) a spotlight award or something like that? Anyways, great idea and game, it was fun to play.

We've explored this in the past, and doing anything "live" is just too complicated and expensive for us at JetPunk. We're only 2 people, and we don't have the resources to produce something like that (nevermind to upkeep it as well).

I didn't exactly mean like an actual "live event" per se, but rather something which people could just do, and one of you could see who completes it the fastest or whatever. But I do understand that is incredibly tough running this website with just two people, so props to you and Quizmaster for making as great as it is.

How about keeping the theme, but removing the list of words to be found? In its current format, I can't see anyone getting less than 100% every day, since there's no time limit, and the list of words to be found is right there in front of you. It's just a matter of time before you find them all. Wordfinds aren't particularly challenging, as they don't involve logic or strategy. But if you remove the list of words, it would get interesting, and you'd have to use your knowledge of the daily category to find every word. Maybe there could even be a countdown of the number of words left to find.
+4
Level 68
Feb 1, 2022
Problem: the answers are not well defined without a word list, except for very specific categories like Countries. In fact,

Saturday's there will be no word list and you'll have to make a judgement on when you think you found them all.

Sunday's are cryptic, so you'll be give clues to words instead of the words themselves.

The puzzles are not meant to be extremely difficult, because the more difficult you make it the smaller your audience will be. I tested today's grid with non-JetPunkers (and somewhat intelligent people) and they struggled to find all the words.

+1
Level 81
Feb 1, 2022
Would you consider putting in a timer that counts up from 0? It would allow users to track their progress and compare results over time (even if it's hard to make a direct comparison with different grid sizes and numbers of words), but without the pressure of possibly not finishing.

This is definitely a great idea, and I'm excited to check back here every day!

+2
Level 68
Feb 1, 2022
It's hard to do this because you can leave and come back to it. So then the only timer would be when you first visit the page that day, but if you happen to visit just after it resets but don't play it immediately, the timer ends up being pointless.

^Agreed. Minigames always pull me in for a day or two after they are made, but then I just kinda forget about them. With this at the top of the home screen every day now with different answers, I'll better be able to: 1. remember it and 2. be willing to play it without getting bored. If this draws more attention to JetPunk and brings us more users (especially those who are less into quizzes but still like puzzles), that'd be awesome! And so, I must say, thank you Stewart (and Quizmaster) for the new feature!

Feb 2, 2022
Then after I got two words, it auto-completed and said I got them all right even though I had only found 2. Only the two words that I actually found turned green at the bottom or have the green line through them, but it won't let me do any more. I believe the correct answers from yesterday were saved, and since I got two more today I reached the total of 17 causing it to think that it was complete. Clearly, the day-to-day reset does not work like it should. Bugs with a new feature like this are to be expected, and it doesn't seem like it should be too hard to fix :)

Yes so this issue happened to all those who played today's puzzle before the fix (i.e. playing after yesterday's 15 lines showed). This means your user file currently has 1 extra score, I'll fix this later (I'm at my full time job at the moment).

It just means your stats are slightly inaccurate for now, but they will be cleaned later :)

Nicely "banwaggony" with the wordle-style results & one-per-day thing, but even so couldn't there be something a bit more fulfilling than a small wordsearch with the answers given below? A nice wee game for the younguns perhaps... But without a chat for each day are we really expecting the young jetpunkers to share their results on twitter/facebook/Truth Social??

How about a wordle-style game where the answer is either a country or a capital, and you get the usual hints about letters being incuded or not after each guess, and also a hint telling you if it's too long or too short. I'm sure that couldn't take more than 1,000 hours to put together!

+2
Level 68
Feb 3, 2022
This is already done by one of the wordle variants. We don't want to copy wordle entirely, because that could produce copyright issues later down the line (now Wordle is bought by NYT too).

Today happens to be a small 7x7 word search, but the list won't always be provided, topics are switched up (including non-geography) and size varies. So I don't think it's necessary unfulfilling.

Also, I think you vastly overestimate people's ability to do word searches. JetPunk hardcores? Sure, they'll find it "easy", but I have tested many of these with a lot of general public who aren't nerds or those who would frequent JetPunk, and they've enjoyed these word searches as a challenge. Some of us just find it easier to analyse a grid of words and find the words, but for many people (most, in fact) it is a difficult thing to visualise.

The main choice of word search was because we don't have the manpower to upkeep other puzzles, whereas word searches are easier to create and less maintenance.

+4
Level 68
Feb 3, 2022
Also on the chat... I don't want the game to become infested with comments like the other minigames, it slows the page down and generally makes it look tacky and bad to the general public.
+1
Level 75
Feb 3, 2022
Not a lawyer, but I would assume that the NYT will have to make money from the trademark of the brand 'wordle' rather than trying to claim ownership of the gameplay, which is a pretty old concept (I loved Mastermind as a kid!). I'll check back in on the puzzles though, and sorry I should've saved my criticism until I'd done a few more.

(And I'm off to find that countries/capitals wordle variant now!)

+1
Level 68
Feb 3, 2022
They don't have to make money off it to trademark it, they own the rights to wordle so they can trademark should they choose. Can they trademark the concept of Mastermind? Nope, but anything which is thematical similar to Wordle (let alone uses their source code, as many variants do), could potentially be in trouble.

And yeah I can see how if today was your first puzzle you'd be disappointed :)

+3
Level 68

Is there going to be a leaderboard or some kind of stats page? I'm thinking something that says, like, 10,000 people have a streak of 3, 20,000 people have a streak of 2, etc. And 100 days from now it would say "80 users have an active streak of 100. The record streak is 100."

Awesome addition to your minigame list! Great work!

As a small improvement, I was just wondering, why don't you use the letters remaining after all the words are found to create some sort of "solution" or "final word"? this would give a hint as if the scheme was correctly completed even when no word list is provided. You could then even add a yellow box to put the solution into to get 100% completion.

Don't know if it's feasible. Anyway the game is really enjoyable as it is. Kudos!

+3
Level 68
Feb 4, 2022
Thanks!

And actually it's because it is not always possible. For example today, there are 13 remaining squares (which I tried to minimize as much as possible). #2 and #3 both had words made from the remaining letters, but it wasn't officially part of the puzzle.

The other issue? The lines are currently transparent enough to allow several to overlap without blocking the view of the letters, but this means it is not immediately clear which letters are leftover at the end.

It's an idea for the future, and maybe a few specials or something, but I don't think it works as a general case. Thanks though!

The letters list is good, I don't think it's too much of a giveaway. Perhaps it should be disabled by default? I didn't notice it for a while, but I admit I used it to make sure there weren't any missing. Of course it doesn't say how many of each letter there are, so it's only a first line of defence.
