How can mn be so far down the list for how many people who get it? Anyone heard of Target, Duluth, twin cities, mall of America, Minnesota twins, timberwolves, wild, vikings, lynx, gophers? Think of any of those? Huh?

If it makes you feel any better, I'm from South Carolina, which is another 10% down the list from Minnesota. I think a lot of people try to go alphabetical order also, therefore not even making it to minnesota.

well...some things to think about...maybe the people are going east to west...maybe even west to east...or perhaps they go with the shorter spellings first

I was trying to go as fast as possible, I tried to get all the easiest spelling states out of the way first, minnesota and south carolina each take a little longer to spell

Hey quizmaster, sometimes the test won't recognize that I typed a word, for example I will type ohio, then continue on with arkansas, but the program won't pick up ohio and I'll have something like "ohioarkan" before i delete then arkan, then it picks up ohio

I got 20 darn you New Hampshire and Massachusetts and Pennsylvania why is Washington dc not counted? (what do you bet half these people stopped the timer) jk but still...
Mar 19, 2013

Washington DC isn't counted because it isn't a state.

Yep, unfortunately you do not get any credit for completing the quiz if you stop the timer. Your skill level points stay the same.

After many many tries, I finally got 40/50. I know the states in ABC order, but I found that by simply looking at the map, and typing the states as your mind sees the shape, made it easier for me. I can't get any more. I simply can't type fast enough. I still only have 4 points for the quiz. I assume you need 100% to get all 5 points. This along with the 100 wpm typing challenge will forever be blemishes on my record, because I will never be able to complete them legitimately, without stopping the timer anyway.

I'm right there with you. I'm up to 39 (and was one letter away from 40!). So far - I agree with what you're saying to stop looking at what I'm typing, look at the map and visualize and just trust my fingers. Messes me up more when I have a typo, but overall much faster. Additionally, I'm finding that if I just do it 5-10 times, call it quits and try again the next day, I get one or two more per day. If I keep doing it longer all in one sitting, I plateau and start regressing...

On all the states quizzes, people have trouble with Massachusetts. Being from there, I can type it in about 3 seconds.

Get a flying start. Copy Massachusetts prior to start and then paste it in immediately on go. 59.9 seconds to enter the other 49 states.

How about accepting postal abbreviations? Or is there already a quiz for that?
Oct 22, 2013

Got 40 on my latest go. Part of that was because the internet lags so much here that I get several before the clock even starts. I think the only way it's possible to get 100% though is to just memorize all the states in order and type it out without pausing. The way I'm doing it I still am looking at the map as the states get filled in and you just can't go fast enough that way...

According to the quiz statistics, 0.5% of people taking the quiz have gotten 100%. As of now, the quiz has been taken 280,598 times meaning that just over 1400 people have gotten all 50 states (or just one person 1400 times). That's way more than I expected.

Not exactly. The quiz stats only count the first time a user (or IP address) attempts the quiz.

47... almost 48... the sequence of the states makes a big difference... for example, if you follow a state ending with the letter a with a state the begins with the letter a, it's much faster (for example, louisiana then alabama)... or if you follow a state ending with a letter typed with the left hand with a state that begins with a letter on the right hand... for example, vermont then new york... you don't have to include spaces in between states with two words... and i find that typing nebraska then kansas is easier because you're ending with k-a and begining with k-a... just some of the tricks i've discovered... if you keep the same sequence each time and do it enough times, it starts becoming a matter of muscle memory vs. typing speed.

Ran out of time, I just can't type that fast! Also had a problem spelling PA that took some time and couldn't spell Mass.

(23)
It isn't all amazing to do this. You just have to have a good memory, and type around 100 wpm. Those of you who may be secretaries and know the states should find this easy. I, personally, can't do this 100%, but 100 wpm isn't all that uncommon, and a good memory of the country isn't uncommon, either.

I always leave the two-worders for last and end up with between 38 and 41 and never get to rhode island, the dakotas or carolinas, west virginia, or most of the news.
May 21, 2014
(23)
This shouldn't be that hard but it takes me about 2 seconds to type the longest word but You should type the short ones like oregon or ohio first and go to the long ones like california and massachusetts. I think it is kinda hard I have gotten 38.

keep running into something I've never seen on another quiz, where if I start the next state too quickly it will not identify the one I've fully typed, ex, just wound up with "kentuckytennesseevirginia" in my input box, it won't register kentucky unless I delete everything else. The faster I've gotten the more I run into this problem. It's incredibly frustrating, as I would've gotten all 50 several times by now if not for randomly running into this and having to take the time to delete and retype states.

It's not impossible... but at that point it just become muscle memory. Instead of how fast you can realistically type, it's measuring how fast you can type something that is totally muscle memorized and requires no thought.
