I find it interesting that Beijing retained the colonial name, Peking, for its airport code.

City names might change, but airport codes are forever. Also BOM, LED, and SGN!

Actually Peking results more from a different way of transliterating the characters that the Chinese government no longer prefers for English. In Portuguese for example Beijing is still known as Peking

I like that I am only 1 of 10% to get BHX as Birmingham, England!!!
It is actually classed as Bickenhill, and 2 minutes from where I live, so I shouldn't get that wrong!!!!

I got 19/30 from guessing random cities. Otherwise I would get nothing.

airport codes assigned years ago and cannot be changed, hence ORD for Chicago, from the days of Orchard Field

NRT is short for Narita. ORD we know is based on Orchard Field. CDG is Charles de Gaulle and LHR is Heathrow. FCO is Fiumicino (who knew other than several million Italians?), where the airport is located. My best guess is that Rio's airport code is derived from Governador Island, the location of the airport, and Galeão, its original name. But how did Toronto end up with YYZ, even if we spot you the Y?

Some of them, you just have to know. ORD is because it was first called Orchard Field (or something similar). Maybe 3 people in chicago know that.
I've been booking flights to Canada, so I know that the major cities all start Y - no idea why Y.
Fun quiz. What I learned from it - I have to travel more.
