It's easy to recruit to the southern states with nice weather, beaches, etc... these recruiters know that "kids" want to have a good time and frankly, thats what most of these kids want. It also helps that the SEC has the best recruiters too. Most of the top 100 recruiters are in southern/coastal areas.... where recruiting is thriving.
It all ebs and flows though. Back in the day, the Big 8 was the beast of the nation with teams like Oklahoma and Nebraska owning everyone, it used to be even joked about that the Nebraska/Oklahoma game would decide things. It was only a little over 15 years ago that the Big 8 has 4 top ten teams at seasons end... with only 8 teams in the conference mind you. Every AQ conference has their time... this is the SECs time.

Yeah, Tuscaloosa and Auburn, Alabama are really known for their beaches. You'll often see students walking around campus with surfboards.
